Le Jazz Grand

LP (Item 44299) Gryphon, 1978 — Condition: Near Mint-
Gatefold
A wonderful session of straight jazz work by Michel Legrand – a larger group outing that's one of the few albums he ever cut in this style! The set has all the warmth and imagination of Legrand's best jazzy soundtrack work – strong themes, bold statements, and a sense of personal investment that comes through even in a larger ensemble – yet the work here is also delivered with even more freedom for solo work than Legrand's film scores, with plenty of longer exploratory passages that showcase the takents of key soloists like Gerry Mulligan, Phil Woods, and Jon Faddis. Most of the album's first side features an extended track suite entitled "Southern Routes" played by a big band – and side two features shorter titles played by a septet, with titles that include "La Pasionaria", "Malagan Stew", "Iberia Nova", and "Basquette".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has light wear.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Gryphon, 1979. Sealed 2LP Gatefold
A serious later session from Don Sebesky – one that shows that he's still capable of plenty of darkness in his music, even after scoring some smoother sets in the 70s! The album's definitely got something of a "jazz orchestra" feel – with a full orchestra that initiates the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Candid, 1960. Near Mint-
One of the most righteous albums that Max Roach ever cut – and a monumental jazz release from the heart of the Civil Rights era! As you can guess from the cover and title, there's a very political bent to the record – served up in righteous lyrics penned by Oscar Brand Jr, and sung by ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

On The Corner
Columbia, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold
A sublime bit of Miles Davis electric funk – one of the best-remembered electric sets from the 70s, and for good reason too! The tracks are long, the jams are hard, and the whole thing has a lot more funk than some of the noise you'd get on other Miles albums of the time – thanks to ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Sun Ship

Prestige, Late 40s/1973. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Nice 2LP set that brings together a huge amount of pivotal work from the early bop years of Diz, including titles recorded for the Guild and Musicraft labels, as well as Prestige. Duke Ellington

Hi Fi Ellington Uptown
Columbia, 1953. Near Mint-
One of Duke Ellington's standout sides for Columbia – a strong recording that revisits many of the best elements of his earlier work, and offers up some more sophisticated scoring for the 50s – thanks to extended track length in the LP generation! The tunes here are older ones, but ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Getz

Master
Columbia, 1975. Very Good+
A gem of a session from Stan Getz – recorded in 1975, but unissued until the mid 80s! Herbie Hancock

Sunlight
Columbia, 1978. Near Mint-
An overlooked little gem in Herbie Hancock's 70s catalog – and a sweet set of funky tunes that adds an R&B edge to the Headhunters sound!
