As if the screaming title didn't tell you enough, the album features Shank's Brazilian sides – apparently culled from his Pacific Jazz recordings from the 50s and 60s, featuring players that range from Laurindo Almeida to Chet Baker to Joe Pass, Clare Fischer, and Joao Donato. Bud's always at his best in these moments – and heck, some say he even invented the format! Titles include "If I Should Lose You", "Carioca Hills", "Summer Samba", "Elizete", "Nocturno", "Sausalito", "Otem A Note", and "Samba Do Aviao". We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Pacific Jazz, 1955. Very Good
A west coast classic – featuring some of Bud Shank's best small group work of the mid 50s! The album has Shank playing in two different groups, one with Shorty Rogers on trumpet, one with the great Bill Perkins on tenor – and we'll be honest in saying that Perkins' tone is incredible, ... Pacific Jazz, 1956. Near Mint-
One of the gems in Bud Shank's late 50s catalog for Pacific Jazz – a rare album that features him on tenor, instead of his usual alto and flute! The set's an easily-blown quartet one – with a lineup that features Claude Williamson on piano, Don Prell on bass, and Chuck Flores on drums. ... LP, Vinyl record album

World Pacific, Late 60s. Very Good- Gatefold
An excellent album from funky guitarist Wilbert Longmire – probably his best, in our opinion! The album was recorded in LA with some very hip arrangements from Joe Sample – at the head of a largeish soul jazz group that includes usual suspects from the LA scene, like Paul Humphrey, ... Welcome Home
World Pacific, Late 60s. Sealed Gatefold
Groovy set of soul jazz organ tracks that has Groove playing with a large-ish group that includes George Freeman, Tom Scott, Anthony Ortega, Wilton Felder, and Paul Humphrey. The set's not totally hard and funky, but it's got a nice soulful swinging groove, with a tight LA 60s sound to it. ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eternal Equinox
World Pacific, Late 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of Gerald Wilson's hippest albums for World Pacific – and all of them are pretty darn hip! This set is one of Gerald's last for the label – cut in a run of very successful, and very strong big band soul jazz albums that brought together the cream of the crop of the LA underground. ... So Danco Samba
World Pacific, 1964. Very Good+
One of the grooviest albums ever from pianist Clare Fischer – and one of the few to really get at the bossa nova spirit that's only hinted at in some of his other work! Clare's bossa touches had a great effect on other artists in the 60s – most notably Cal Tjader – but here, he's ... LP, Vinyl record album

World Pacific, 1959. Very Good
The Mastersounds seem to take a page from the book of the MJQ – especially with a title like this – but as usual, the end results are a fair bit hipper!
