Brazil! Brazil! Brazil!

LP (Item 44222) World Pacific, Mid 60s — Condition: Used
Out Of Stock

LP

As if the screaming title didn't tell you enough, the album features Shank's Brazilian sides – apparently culled from his Pacific Jazz recordings from the 50s and 60s, featuring players that range from Laurindo Almeida to Chet Baker to Joe Pass, Clare Fischer, and Joao Donato. Bud's always at his best in these moments – and heck, some say he even invented the format! Titles include "If I Should Lose You", "Carioca Hills", "Summer Samba", "Elizete", "Nocturno", "Sausalito", "Otem A Note", and "Samba Do Aviao".  © 1996-2016, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Pacific Jazz, 1955. Poor
A west coast classic – featuring some of Bud Shank's best small group work of the mid 50s! The album has Shank playing in two different groups, one with Shorty Rogers on trumpet, one with the great Bill Perkins on tenor – and we'll be honest in saying that Perkins' tone is incredible, ... Barefoot Adventure
Pacific Jazz, 1961. Very Good-
Amazing! Although this album's a soundtrack to some goofy California surfer film, it's actually a killer batch of off-kilter jazz tracks composed by Bud Shank, and with a sound that's unlike anything we've ever heard from him! The frontline of the session is Shank, Bob Cooper, and Carmell Jones ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bud Shank Quartet
Pacific Jazz, 1956. Very Good
A great little album by Bud – simple, clean, understated, and as strong a document of his powers on alto and flute as you'll ever find! The mid 50s session features Bud with a quartet that includes Claude Williamson on piano, Chuck Flores on drums, and Don Prell on bass – and the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Revolution
World Pacific, Late 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
An excellent album from funky guitarist Wilbert Longmire – probably his best, in our opinion! The album was recorded in LA with some very hip arrangements from Joe Sample – at the head of a largeish soul jazz group that includes usual suspects from the LA scene, like Paul Humphrey, ... Idle Moments
Blue Note, Early 60s. Very Good+
A warmly melodic session from Blue Note's greatest guitarist! The sound of the set's as evocative as the title – an idle moment of space between the notes, explored by Green's tight single-note work on guitar – and wonderfully supported by a lineup that includes Joe Henderson, Bobby ... 3 Sounds
Blue Note, 1971. Very Good
The last Three Sounds album for Blue Note – and the funkiest too – thanks to lots more electrification than usual, and some killer arrangements from the mighty Monk Higgins! Om
Impulse, 1965. Very Good+ Gatefold
A pure statement of being and essence – and one of John Coltrane's spiritual masterpieces from the 60s! The 1965 recording was one of Trane's most adventurous so far – as it featured just one album-length track, building up out of relatively free expressions from Coltrane in the studio ... Gamut
Solid State, Late 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
A gem of a record from Chico Hamilton – maybe our favorite album ever from the legendary drummer! The set's a fantastic bit of nuttiness, with Chico leading a tight group with Steven Potts on alto and Russell Andrews on tenor, both playing hard over a subdued background of four trombones ... Blue Note, 1964. Very Good+
A masterpiece from George Braith – one of the most unique sax players of the 60s! The album's a Blue Note classic in the Larry Young vein – with lots of free spiralling modal lines, and heavenly solos on organ, guitar, and reeds – the former of which are played by Billy Gardner ... Kelly Great
Vee Jay, 1960. Very Good+
One of Wynton Kelly's greatest albums, and an all-star hardbop session that includes Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones. With Philly Joe on drums, and Morgan and Shorter, the LP almost has the feel of a classic Art Blakey session for Blue Note, but Kelly's piano gives ... LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige, 1968. Near Mint-
A wonderfully warm, deeply creative session from Charles McPherson – a set that moves way past his boppish roots, into a new zone of lyricism and imagination!
