From Broadway To Hollywood

LP (Item 440682) Trio (Japan), 1977 — Condition: Near Mint-

An ultra-hip record from Lorez Alexandria – one of her grooviest albums ever, and a set that was only ever issued in Japan! The set features Lorez hitting some of the hippest, most rhythmic modes of her career – working with jazzy backing arranged by Gildo Mahones and Art Hillery, filled with soul and spirit, and really inspiring Lorez to hit those snapping sort of grooves that make her best tracks so great! Titles include her classic take on "Send In The Clowns" – a real jazz dance classic that goes far beyond its roots – plus the titles "Maybe This Time", "Where Is Love", "Change Partners", "One", "Come Sunday", "Bright Lights & You", and "You Leave Me Breathless".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Art Union pressing from 2011 – with obi!)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Federal, Late 50s. Very Good
A classic album from one of our favorite jazz singers ever – a set that really set a whole new standard for a generation! Joe Lee Wilson & Bond Street

What Would It Be Without You
Survival, 1975. Sealed
A really nice album by vocalist Joe Lee Wilson – a soulful, spiritual singer who didn't always make great albums! Wilson's got a mellow style of singing that's very much in the Leon Thomas tradition – and on this record, he's working with a group (and material) that really lets him hit ... LP, Vinyl record album
Riverside, 1961. Near Mint-
One of the best albums from singer Teri Thornton – a jazz vocalist who was really starting to come into her own at the beginning of the 60s, and shines here in a way that's different from some of her bigger label sets! Backings are by Norman Simmons – a pianist we love on his own, and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Bethlehem, 1955. Very Good
A surprisingly great set that features Francis Faye singing jazz renditions of older folk songs – one of the first such sessions of its type (the genre would become more popular a few years later), and done with an approach that has the songs all re-tuned for a 50s modern ear by Russ Garcia, ... Sarah Vaughan

Copacabana
Pablo, 1979. Near Mint-
An excellent album of tunes recorded in Brazil – featuring a sweet mellow vibe that works very well with Sarah's vocals, done in a direction that we hardly expected her to take at this point! Anita O'Day

All The Sad Young Men
Verve, 1961. Very Good+
A striking session for Anita O'Day – and a refreshing change from her work of the 50s! This one has Anita singing with arrangements by Gary McFarland, a mix of easy jazz styles that show a more sophisticated side to her voice – a bit more careful than before, with more hidden in the ... Westbound, 1972. Very Good
Maybe the funkiest album ever cut for the legendary Westbound label in Detroit – and that's saying a lot, given that the company was the initial home to Funkadelic! Yet on this stunning full length set, The Counts maybe do that famous group one better – pushing aside their vocals for ... LP, Vinyl record album
Buddah, 1970. Very Good
Although this set was issued by Buddah in 1970, it's a great set featuring some of the earliest work that the Five Stairsteps recorded for Curtis Mayfield's Windy C label during the late 60s, under his production talents as well! We love all of the Burke brothers albums, both as a group and solo, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Army Arrangement
Celluloid, 1985. Near Mint-
One of the best of Fela's albums from the 80's, and one that features one long track – "Army Arrangement" – done in vocal and instrumental versions, each lasting for a side of the record. The track's an excellent one – with a hard heavy groove, as the cut's the "ori ... LP, Vinyl record album
