Stan Levey Plays The Compositions Of Cooper, Holman, & Giuffre (10 inch LP)

LP (Item 440547) Bethlehem, 1954 — Condition: Near Mint-
The first album ever from drummer Stan Levey, but a set that already shows his mighty talents as a leader! Stan wisely chose some great songs to work with here – penned by west coast highlights Jimmy Giuffre, Bob Cooper, and Bill Holman – and taken into a small combo mode that really shakes the tunes free of any of the larger Kenton-esque qualities of the composers. Giuffre is on the record – playing baritone in the sextet along with Zoot Sims on tenor, Conte Candoli on trumpet, Claude Williamson on piano, and Max Bennett on bass – about as great of a Bethlehem lineup as you could hope for at the time. Sims brings in a really rich sense of soul tot he record – and titles include "Drum Sticks", "Lightnin' Bug", "Exaktamo", and "Extraversion".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Australian Jazz Quartet

Australian Jazz Quartet (10-inch)
Bethlehem, 1956. Very Good
A mighty sweet set of 50s modern jazz – played by some key musicians from Australian who were working in the US at the time! The record's got a style that's somewhere between the hippest sessions of LA and Sweden at the time – all the coolness of both scenes, but a sense of playful ... LP, Vinyl record album
Bethlehem, 1955. Near Mint-
Easily one of the best albums ever cut by this oft-overlooked bop trumpeter – and a clean, clear, no-nonsense session played in the company of a crack group that includes Sahib Shihab, Duke Jordan, Percy Heath, and Philly Joe Jones. Maggie's in the lead on firey solos, and tracks are short, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Bethlehem, 1957. Very Good+
A well-titled set from Art Blakey – considering the hard-driving sound of the group! The album's one of the best from that unusual year of 1957 – almost a "lost" year for Art, when he was working away from Blue Note with a very different lineup of the Jazz Messengers than on ... Duke Ellington

Duke Ellington Presents
Bethlehem, 1956. Very Good+
An excellent and oft-overlooked 50s session from Duke – recorded in Chicago as a one-off for the Bethlehem label, and done with a lush, rich sound that's really tremendous! K + JJ – East Coast Jazz Series No 7
Bethlehem, Mid 50s. Very Good
A cool quintet session from the great trombonists JJ Johnson and Kai Winding – one that really lets their twin horns soar free together – with only a bit of light backing to spur them on! Bethlehem, 1960. Near Mint-
A really great little set from Zoot Sims – earthy, and almost a bit more fragile than much of his other work! There's a real "down home" feel to the whole record – as Zoot blows comfortably and easily in a quartet with Dave McKenna on piano, George Tucker on bass, and Dannie ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mal Waldron

Left Alone
Bethlehem, 1959. Near Mint-
A beautiful album by Mal Waldron – recorded in 1960, after the passing of Billie Holiday, and a very loving tribute by Waldron, who was her accompanist for a number of years. The set moves way past the usual "Holiday songbook" mode, and features instead a dark batch of tracks, two ... LP, Vinyl record album
Bethlehem, 1956. Sealed
The album's a bit less "historical" than you might guess from the title – at least at the time it was issued in the mid 50s! The material is from Chicago sessions recorded in 1956 – unusual non-Columbia material for the period, featuring the Ellington group working in a ... LP, Vinyl record album

JJ Johnson & Kai Winding

Nuf Said
Bethlehem, 1955. Very Good+
A great mid 50s recording by one of the greatest pairings in popular jazz of the time – the twin-trombone lead work of JJ Johnson and Kai Winding, both players who'd come from differing backgrounds, but who created a wonderful new sound together! The interplay between the trombones on ... LP, Vinyl record album

One of Sonny Criss' classic albums for Imperial – a brilliant batch of LA bop from the 50s, with an impeccable sound throughout!
