We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Warner, 1984. Very Good+ (pic cover)
One of our favorite tracks ever from Prince – an instantly funky, instantly catchy tune that never fails to blow us away with its dexterity! The jam sounds great, even after all these years – and it's backed by a non-LP cut, "Another Lonely Christmas" – in which Prince ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Purple Rain/God
Warner, 1984. Very Good
A great release of the song that really put Prince over the top – a song that got him maybe more play on rock and pop stations than he was ever getting on soul radio – and which for years became an anthem for folks who never would have touched his music in years before! "God" ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Down To Earth, Early 70s. Very Good
One of the best tracks from this Chicago funk legend! The tune starts with a great break, has a fuzzed-out Superfly kind of groove, and funks it on in a totally righteous way! Loads of great fuzzy guitar – and a very hip sound that takes it past most of The General's other work! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Kansas City/Stone Fox
King, Mid 60s. Very Good+
"Stone Fox" is the real winner here – an instrumental tune with some all-out bluesy guitar, riffing and rasping over a fast vamp by the band, sounding more like a Chicago Chess number than James' usual mid 60s bag! "Kansas City" is, of course, a version of the famous ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Twinight, Late 60s. Very Good
An incredible early single from The Notations! "Just You & Me" is a heavenly ballad cut – harmonies moving back and forth with ease, getting a little tweak on the chorus in a way that reminds us of moments from earlier singles by The Sheppards. "I've Been Tryin" is ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Yew, Early 70s. Very Good-
Great work by one of the under-recorded harmony groups of the early 70s scene – a well-voiced, sweet-toned combo that could sing with the best, produced here by Van McCoy to perfection, on one ballad cut ("The Language Of Love") and one more strident groover ("I Got Love"). 7-inch, Vinyl record
Atlantic, Late 60s. Very Good
2 stone killers from Archie Bell & The Drells – both of them in that tight and outta site groovy mode that graced their best early work for Atlantic! There's not as much hard funk here as on "Tighten Up", but the sound is somehow even richer – a swinging party kind of ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Paisley Park, 1987. Very Good (pic cover)
A double-header of cuts from the Sign O The Times album! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Paisley Park, 1985. Very Good+ (pic cover)
A sweet sweet classic from Prince – a tune that was hailed as a move to psychedelic modes at the time, but which was really just a way for the singer to open up a whole new side of his talents! "Raspberry Beret" is wonderfully catchy – but it's also got a groove that's maybe ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
