❔
The cover might be a bit "on the nose" – but the album itself has some really nice tracks, thanks in part to production and arrangements by Pee Wee Ellis, who always managed to get the best out of Esther during the 70s! The groove's got a lot top shelf clubby soul and easygoing funky swagger – and Esther sounds great out front! Tracks include "Into The Mystic", "Love Addict", "If I Loved You", "In A Soft & Subtle Way", "My Prayer", and "Somewhere Along The Line".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes insert. Cover has a small cutout hole and light wear.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Mercury, 1979. Near Mint-
A sweet groover from Esther Phillips – done in a style that's much more club-oriented than before, but which we find ourselves liking quite a lot! Given that Esther had explored other modes quite thoroughly on other 60s and 70s sessions, the change here is actually a nice one – and the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Mercury, 1983. Near Mint-
One of the last great pop records from Donna Summer – thanks to super huge radio and video play for the title cut – and to a huge amount of tuneful tracks put together by producer/arranger Michael Omartin! By this point, Summer isn't trying to fool anyone that she's a deeper soul ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jerry Butler

Ice On Ice
Mercury, 1969. Very Good+
Killer stuff – as Jerry's getting the full early Philly treatment here, with arrangements by Thom Bell, Bobby Martin, and Roland Chambers, and production by a young Gamble and Huff! The sound isn't nearly as icy as the old Vee Jay days – but that's fine with us, as Jerry is nice and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jerry Butler

Ice Man Cometh
Mercury, 1968. Very Good
Amazing soul from one of the greats of the 60s! This album was one of the first that Jerry cut for Mercury – where he'd begun working with the young team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff to completely rework the earlier sound he'd forged at Vee Jay Records. The album's still got Jerry singing ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jerry Butler

Soul Goes On
Mercury, 1968. Very Good+
A great record, and one that's more of a deeper soul effort than some of his other Mercury sessions! Jerry's back recording in Chicago, and the album has arrangements by Arthur Wright, and production by Cal Carter for the Fountain Productions imprint that would grace Jerry and Billy Butler's ... Dee Dee Warwick

I Want To Be With You
Mercury, 1967. Very Good-
Wonderful work from Dionne Warwick's lesser-known sister – a hell of a great singer, and one who packs even more punch than her famous sibling! The gem of a set has all the poise and class of Dionne, but comes across with a lot more soul as well – a great mix that's very much in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Freedom Express

Easy Ridin
Mercury, 1970. Very Good
Pretty decent soul/rock material from the early 70s. The liner notes say that these guys started their career working with Buddy Miles, Electric Flag, and Sam & Dave – but the record's got a lot more of a soul vibe than you might expect, and it reminds us of some of the more rock-sounding ... Westbound, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold
An insane classic from one of the wildest funk bands ever! According to reports, George Clinton and the band cut this set in a marathon 48-hour stretch in the studio – working like mad all night and day long, after dropping a motherlode of some mighty fine acid! We don't know if that story's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roger (Roger Troutman)

Many Facets Of Roger
Warner, 1981. Near Mint-
There's many facets of Roger – and they're all pretty darn funky! From this vantage point, all we can think of is that Roger Troutman must have had some sort of crystal ball to see into the hip hop sampling future – either that, or he was busy cooking up west coast gangster funk drones ... Hi Records/MCA, 1970s. Near Mint-
A winning selection of some of Ann Peebles' best work for Hi Records – featuring stellar production by Willie Mitchell, and a stone-mellow Memphis soul approach to the music. Includes the great sample cut "I Can't Stand The Rain", plus "Walk Away", "Breaking Up ... LP, Vinyl record album
