Happy Children

LP (Item 43900) Warner, 1973 — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold
This UK Afro Funk group is slicking things up a bit for this 1973 album – but not in a bad way, because it actually kicks up the groove considerably. In fact, it almost sounds like they've been listening to a bit of War – because the the best tracks on the album have lots of that funky clavinet and stepping bass that you get in War's best moments, filtered through the group's own dubby brand of African rhythms, vaguely like the work of Cymande, but a bit more straight ahead. Titles include "Somaja", "Fire", "Kotoku", "We Want To Know", "Take Your Trouble Go", "Bassa Bassa", and "Adwoa".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Bala Miller & The Great Music Pirameeds Of Africa

Pyramids
Afrodisia (Nigeria), 1979. Near Mint-
Bala Miller's got a great pan-African group here – one that's more from the western side of the scene, despite the pyramids mentioned in their name – with players hailing from Ghana, Nigeria, and Cameroon – all coming together in a mighty righteous style! The music is fairly ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mighty raw work on thumb piano from Ekuka Morris Sirikiti – mostly pulled from radio broadcasts in northern Uganda, and served up here with a very timeless vibe! Shin Joong Hyun & Yup Juns
Jigu (South Korea), 1974. Near Mint-
A heady set from mid 70s South Korea – the debut album from a mighty edgey little trio! Kind of hard to put a finger on the style of Jho Archer – which is probably why they used the phrase "many talents" in the title of this one! Jho's got a bit of Caribbean in his vocals – traces of calypso and Haitian soul, inflected with a hipper French approach to the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lou Rawls

Feelin' Good
Capitol, Late 60s. Very Good+
One of Lou Rawls' best for Capitol – produced by David Axelrod, and arranged by HB Barnum with a joyous, leaping, sock-soulful groove!
