Yeh Yeh

LP (Item 436530) Imperial, 1965 — Condition: Very Good+
A brilliant mix of jazz, soul, and R&B – all filtered through a mod sort of London freshness, as early proof that the city could always take some great things from our own musical roots, and feed it back to us with a whole new flavor! Georgie Fame's no copycat here, though – and the sound is instantly Fame-like – a style that's really not the sort that any Americans were doing at the time, and certainly never this well. Hard-burning Hammond colors most of the tunes here – played with a tightly vamping quality – but it's Georgie's charmingly crackling vocals that really win us over! Titles include "Gimme That Wine", "Pink Champagne", "Monkeying Around", "I Love The Life I Live", "Point Of No Return", "Preach & Teach", "Get On The Right Track Baby", and the hit "Yeh Yeh".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Jackie & Roy

Wilder Alias
CTI, 1974. Near Mint- Gatefold
Jackie & Roy are definitely getting bit wilder here – hitting an electric early 70s CTI mode, and really growing a lot in the process! The session has the vocal pair working with CTI players who include Hubert Laws on flute, Joe Farrell on saxes, Roy Pennington on vibes, and Steve Gadd ... LP, Vinyl record album

Billie Holiday

Lady In Satin
Columbia, 1958. Very Good+
One of Billie's last recordings, and an incredibly striking batch of songs arranged by Ray Ellis with a sad, fragile ege that's perfect for the style of her later work. Billie's voice is faltering, but in a way that only makes the songs sound more personal and more compelling – and although ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie Jefferson/Joe Carroll/Annie Ross

Bebop Singers
Prestige, 1952/1953. Very Good+
An essential album for fans of early vocalese – and a record that brings together 3 of the greatest talents of the genre! The sides were pulled from early Prestige singles by the artists – and Eddie Jefferson's represented on 4 great numbers with backing by a group that includes Seldon ... LP, Vinyl record album
Daffodil, 1979. Very Good+
A live little set from Blossom Dearie – one recorded in Reno at the end of the 70s, with mostly Blossom on piano and vocals, plus a bit of bass from Bill Takas and some guest duet vocals from Bob Dorough! The album really captures the charm and grace of Blossom in her later live years – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Accompanied by Pete King, Johnny Mandel, Skip Martin, Marty Paich, and Pete Rugolo. LP, Vinyl record album
RCA, 1963. Near Mint-
A killer album that's one of Joe's best! Unlike some of his other albums as a vocalist, in which the arrangements are a bit too cluttered to swing, this nice relaxed live set has Joe hitting a very soulful groove, and stepping out nicely on cuts like "Gravy Waltz", "Come Back ... Atlantic, 1963. Very Good
One of our favorite-ever albums from Mel Torme – a set that sparkles with the same smooth swing as his best late 50s dates for Bethlehem records! Like those sets, this one features Torme's voice really taking off over some tight jazzy charts – arranged by Johnny Williams, Shorty Rogers ... LP, Vinyl record album
Bethlehem, 1956. Very Good+
A mid 70s repackaging of one of the best vocal jazz albums that Bethlehem ever produced, and a landmark recording in the vocalese tradition! The first record ever from a young Bob Dorough – and easily one of his most swinging sessions! The style here is a bit straighter jazz than on some of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chris Connor

Finest Of Chris Connor
Bethlehem, Late 50s. Very Good 2LP
A tasty little 2LP set – one that collects the excellent late 50s vocal work cut for the Bethlehem label by Chris Connor! At the time, Chris had a sound that she virtually invented – icy vocals backed by small combo jazz, in a very spare and subtle setting – and the sound was, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Mercury, 1959. Near Mint-
A great session from 1959 – one that features John Coltrane playing tenor in a combo that's billed as being led by altoist Cannonball Adderley – but which is really more of a Miles Davis combo, without Miles! The set was recorded in Chicago when both were stopping through the city ... LP, Vinyl record album
