cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.
The second 10" LP in Johnny's classic "collates" series for Verve – a hard-hitting batch of tracks that blows away any work he recorded with Ellington in earlier years! Johnny's at the head of the group – and the set offers an amazing focus on his alto sax lines – ... LP, Vinyl record album
A nice little 60s album by Johnny Hodges – one of the few post-Verve sessions that has him still playing in the hard swinging Ellingtonia small combo mode of the 50s! Players are all strong – and include Jimmy Jones, Cat Anderson, Ray Nance, Harry Carney, and Paul Gonsalves – and ... LP, Vinyl record album
A really beautiful Verve session from Johnny Hodges – recorded with a style that's a bit looser than some of his others, and a real focus on Johnny's wonderfully biting tone! The group's a largeish one, playing in an Ellingtonish mode, but Hodges is right out front in the mix, dominating ... LP, Vinyl record album
An overlooked gem from Johnny Hodges – a 60s session that hearkens back to the "with strings" Verve mode of the 50s – but one that also updates the approach strongly, thanks to some well crafted arrangements by Oliver Nelson! Nelson's work in the jazz backings for soloist ... LP, Vinyl record album
Although the set's a groovy batch of shorter jazz tracks, with larger arrangements by Jimmy Jones, Hodges still solos nicely, and with that trademark tone that always cuts through the b.s.! The title cut's a mis-chosen version of Petula Clark's big hit, but the record's actually got some other ... LP, Vinyl record album
OK, so the title's a bit misleading – as Hodges never used to be "Duke", just played with him – but the record's a great one – really sharp set of standards from the mid 50s, played with a tightly moving focus! The small group settings includes Ellingtonians, plus the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Not much of a cover and title, but a great lost slice of Verve from the early 60s – with Hodges on alto, and Lalo Schifrin on piano and Barry Galbraith on guitar – a pretty groovy group! LP, Vinyl record album
A pretty well done collection of Stan's best work for Verve from the late 50s and early 60s – packaged in a cover that shows him with his wife and kids! (For some odd reason, many of Stan's albums from the time have him with kids on the front. Was Verve trying to sell him as the "family ... LP, Vinyl record album
A surprisingly wonderful album from Artie Shaw – one that takes his older groove and nicely strips it down for the 50s, and which features some especially great guitar work from Tal Farlow! Other players in the group include Hank Jones on piano, Joe Roland on vibes, Tommy Potter on bass, and ... LP, Vinyl record album
