Generations Suite

LP (Item 43611) Denon (Japan), 1978 — Condition: Near Mint-

A rare Japanese-only session from the incredible Bridgewater Brothers – and some of their best work of the 70s! The session features Cecil on trumpet, Ron on saxes – and a supporting group that includes Reggie Workman, Donald Smith, Hubert Eaves, and Michael Carvin. The feel of the material is similar to some of Billy Harper's best Japanese albums from the time – searching, in a post-Coltrane way, but never too indulgent, and always with a focus on strong, solid, soulful playing. Sections of the suite include "African Sunrise", "Sade", "Your Ballad", and "Samba Para Ustedos".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes obi!)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Jo Jones

Our Man Papa Jo
Denon (Japan), 1978. Near Mint-
Tight later work from Jo Jones – a set that's got all the swinging energy of the early years, but also a relaxed vibe that's mighty nice too! There's a good quality to the recording – as it's one of those killer 70s sessions done for Denon in Japan – and Jones is clearly in ... LP, Vinyl record album

Elvin Jones

Soul Train
Denon (Japan), 1980. Near Mint-
Soulful intensity from Elvin Jones and his Jazz Machine! Soul Train is of the many great originally import-only sessions that Jones cut with his Jazz Machine group during the late 70s – an ensemble who in this case featured Andrew White on alto, and Ari Brown on tenor and soprano. Ahmad Jamal

One
20th Century, 1978. Near Mint-
A great little set from Ahmad – laidback, mellow, with a slowly spiralling groove that's slyly funky at times. Ahmad's playing acoustic piano and clavinet on the record – and arrangements are by Bones Howe, Richard Evans, Ahmad, and Mike Melvoin. A few tracks feature a larger group ... LP, Vinyl record album

Living On The Edge
Black Saint (Italy), 1989. Very Good+
The album's got a bit of an odd title – as we hardly think that Redman was living on the edge at the time – but it's also a great little set, no matter what the name! Dewey's playing in a soulful and inside mode on most tracks – working in a style that recalls some of Archie ... LP, Vinyl record album

Don't Stop The Music

A stone classic from The Brecker Brothers – working here at a new level for 70s jazz fusion! One of the few albums as a leader from guitarist Mick Goodrick – a musician who's strong sense of color made him a perfect sideman for vibist Gary Burton in the 70s – and who here explores some wonderful territory of his own!
