❔

One of the best Curtom dancefloor projects from the label's later disco years – an all-out clubby set from vocalist Ava Cherry, recorded both at Curtom and Sigma Sound! Unlike other Curtom disco efforts, which almost seem to carry an apology for taking a straighter singer onto the dancefloor, this set has an unabashedly joyous feel – one that's perfect for Ava's richly soulful vocals, which hit the backings here with the same force as some of the best disco divas on Salsoul. Arrangements are by Bobby Eli and Gil Askey – and titles include "You Never Loved Me", "I Just Can't Shake The Feeling", "Where There's Smoke There's Fire", "Gimme Your Lovin", "Single Woman Married Man", and "I'm Always Ready".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Shrinkwrap is lightly shopworn.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Capitol, 1982. Near Mint-
One of the more new wave-oriented moments from Ava Cherry – a singer we know best from her solo work in soul, but who also has a pretty strong pedigree on the rock side of the spectrum as well! The instrumentation is heavy on keyboards – played by Mark Isham, in a way that sometimes ... LP, Vinyl record album
Curtom, 1975. Very Good+
A great album by Curtis Mayfield – filled with some excellent lesser-known gems! There's No Place Like America was Curtis' scathing testament to the State Of The Union – and it's got a hip political tone that's right up there with the best of his early 70s songwriting – perhaps ... Curtis Mayfield

Back To The World
Curtom, 1973. Very Good Gatefold
Pure genius from Curtis Mayfield – and a record that's got all the righteousness and political power you might guess from the cover! The album burns with a sense of empowerment that's every bit the best strength of Curtom in the 70s – a sublime blend of heavy soul, funky undercurrents, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Revelation

Revelation (1975)
RSO, 1975. Near Mint-
Great stuff from Revelation – one of those "second generation" east coast harmony groups of the 70s, who emerged after the big early 70s wave of hit harmonists, with a style that was equally polished, and perhaps more sophisticated, if less chart-wise than their earlier brethren. ... LP, Vinyl record album
Curtom, 1974. Very Good Gatefold
A great little album by The Impressions – possibly their best of the 70s! The record's got a very solid harmony soul approach, and Lowrell Simon wrote and produced a number of tracks with Rich Tufo – giving the album the same sweet sexy sound that he brought to his best solo records, ... Leroy Hutson

Feel The Spirit
Curtom, 1976. Very Good+
Pure genius from the great Leroy Hutson – a set that's maybe got a funkier feel than some of his previous albums – and all of the completely charming vocals that we've always loved from Leroy over the years! There's plenty of messages in the grooves – and in a way, at this point ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mystique

Mystique
Curtom, 1977. Near Mint-
Former Impressions singer Ralph Johnson heads up this Chicago soul quartet from the 70's, and the album shares the production talents of Jerry Butler, Bunny Sigler, Rich Tufo, Lowrell Simon, and Eugene McDaniels. The sound is a mix of mid 70's Curtom funk and Chicago soul vocal stylings, and the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Linda Clifford

Let Me Be Your Woman
Curtom, 1979. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Linda Clifford goes a bit over the top with this one – a lavish double-length set, of the sort that ended up bankrupting the Curtom label during the late 70s! Linda's very much in full-disco mode, singing to long clubby arrangements by Gil Askey that have more strings than before – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Impressions

Loving Power
Curtom, 1976. Near Mint-
Later Curtom work from The Impressions – but still plenty darn nice, with a super-dope vocal group approach on the best tracks! The title cut is worth the price of admission alone – as it's a slow-stepping harmony tune that really burns with a sweet mellow feel – sung to ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bobby Whiteside

Bittersweet Stories
Curtom, 1974. Sealed
A very strange release on Curtom – and we're not sure if we should call it a rock album or a soul album! Bobby Whiteside produced and arranged, and he's got sort of a 70's AM radio sound, with lots of pop harmonies, and catchy overproduced hooks. Titles include "Pen Of A Poet", ... Curtis Mayfield

Curtis/Live!
Curtom, 1970. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
One of the greatest albums ever from the legendary soul singer Curtis Mayfield – even though it's different than most of the rest as well! Curtis is captured here in a small club, with a tight band, spinning out these extended readings of some of his best tunes – both tracks he sang ... LP, Vinyl record album

Archie Bell & The Drells

There's Gonna Be A Showdown
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good+
A stormer from Archie Bell & The Drells – one of our favorite soul albums ever, and a masterpiece of mid-tempo soul! Archie Bell & The Drells sound amazing here – light years from the rougher funk of their earlier years, yet still with a groove that's undeniable – an ... LP, Vinyl record album
