Sounds Of Simon

LP (Item 43379) Spring, Early 70s — Condition: Very Good

Classic Joe Simon – smooth, soulful, and with slight bits of down-home country in the mix. John Richbourg produced the album, which was recorded at Music City in Nashville – a key example of the strength of that city's contribution to the ever-expanding sound of southern soul in the early 70s. Joe's voice is great, as always, and titles include "Help Me Make It Through The Night", "I Can't See Nobody", "To Lay Down Beside You", "My Woman, My Woman, My Wife", "Georgia Blue", and "All My Hard Times".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(White label promo. Cover has some wear and peeling in the top right corner.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

A big one for Joe – and a marked shift after his southern soul recordings of earlier years. For this one, Joe got on the Philly train early, and hired Gamble & Huff to put the whole thing together with a tight smooth soul groove. The group's got greats like Norman Harris, Vince Montana, ... Millie Jackson

It Hurts So Good
Spring, 1973. Very Good-
An excellent early album from Millie Jackson – recorded in a southern soul style in New York and Muscle Shoals, but a lot hipper than most of the rest of the female soul that was coming out of the south at the time. For one thing, Millie was a bad mamma singer – rapping hard and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Millie Jackson

Moment's Pleasure
Spring, 1979. Near Mint-
A bit of a disco effort from Millie, given the time, but also a record that still has plenty of nice soul touches – thanks to Brad Shapiro, Millie's longtime partner at the production helm! The album features a great 2 parter with a nice monologue, entitled "What Went Wrong Last Night ... LP, Vinyl record album

Millie Jackson

Caught Up
Spring, 1974. Very Good+
Seminal 70s southern soul from Millie Jackson – a record that's head and shoulders above most of what she recorded in later years! Act One (Act 1)

Act One
Spring, 1974. Sealed
An obscure soul group, but a great one – equally at home with a fragile harmony tune as they were with more uptempo groovers for the dancefloor! This one and only album from Act One is a perfect illustration of the best two sides of the east coast indie soul scene of the early 70s – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Millie Jackson

Still Caught Up
Spring, 1975. Very Good
A great follow up to Mille Jackson's classic Caught Up album – but one that's also a key turning point too! The theme here is the same as the album before – with tunes that have a woman "caught up" in love and all of its tangles – but the sound is also bolder, more ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lovingly Yours
Spring, 1976. Very Good+
A great point in Millie Jackson's career – recorded when she was picking up more confidence and class, but not going too far into that badass mode of later years! The sound here is still mostly southern soul, but Millie and co-producer Brad Shapiro have warmed it up a lot – bringing in ... LP, Vinyl record album

Winter In America
Strata East, 1974. Near Mint- Gatefold
A beautiful jazzy classic, and perhaps Gil Scott-Heron's most perfectly realized album ever! The record has a completely sophisticated jazzy approach – one that's miles ahead from even Gil's previous work on Flying Dutchman, and which shows him to be one of the most distinctive and emotive ... Swordsmen
RCA, 1969. Sealed
A fantastic album of obscure soul! The group features the duo of Eddie Anderson and Ray Thompson – trading vocal duets in a pointed, fragile, southern-sounding style. Epic, 1974. Very Good-
An insanely wonderful album! Shuggie Otis is the son of Johnny Otis – the LA R&B maestro who was moving heavily into funk at the end of the 60s – and he has this tripped out, super-dope guitar style that he played to strong effect on Johnny's albums of the late 60s and early 70s, ...
