Keep On Comin

LP (Item 427947) Elektra, 1983 — Condition: Very Good+
A great back to basics session from organist Jimmy Smith – recorded live in the early 80s, but with a freewheeling small combo sound that takes us back to his Blue Note years! The group on the album's a quartet – with Jimmy on both piano and organ, Kenny Burrell on guitar, and Johnny Griffin on drums – and the tracks are long and open-ended, with plenty of solo space for all players – especially Burrell, whose warmly-colored lines really help shape the sound of the record. Titles include "No Problem", "Keep On Comin", "Callitwhachawanna", and "Be Yourself" – as well as a short piano solo medley from Jimmy!  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Boss
Verve, 1968. Very Good
A great little small combo record that proves that Jimmy was still hitting strong in the late 60s! Although the bulk of the more famous Verve material featured Jimmy in larger settings or singing or playing pop material, there were also some nice stripped-down sides hidden in the catalog, which ... Any Number Can Win
Verve, 1963. Near Mint- Gatefold
Sessions like this are proof that Jimmy was one of the most fantastic organ players ever – as his work with large arrangements (supplied here by Claus Ogerman) always seems to groove better than his work with small combos. His sound is impeccable, and he soars ahead of the rest of the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Respect
Verve, 1967. Very Good Gatefold
Mad respect for Jimmy Smith – a cool small group record that's different than some of his bigger-concept, larger arrangement records for Verve! The groove here is tight and right on the money – and the tracks are a bit longer than other Verve sessions too – as the master really ... LP, Vinyl record album

Got My Mojo Workin'
Verve, 1965. Very Good+ Gatefold
The title's a bit bluesy, and the record is too – one of the grittier collaborations between Hammond legend Jimmy Smith and ultra-hip arranger Oliver Nelson – who manages to make the whole thing come across with all the right soul styles in the end! Verve, 1962. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of Jimmy Smith's biggest albums of the 60s – and a classic Verve pairing of his lean Hammond organ solos with the fuller, hard-swinging arrangements of Oliver Nelson! Verve, 1964. Very Good Gatefold
A real treasure, and a record that may well be our favorite Jimmy Smith album for Verve – a masterful meeting of his smoking Hammond work with some swingingly sophisticated arrangements by Oliver Nelson and Claus Ogerman! Great work from the second chapter of Grover Washington's career – his post-Kudu run over at Elektra Records!
