One & Only Hank Ballard & His Midnighters

LP (Item 424098) King, Late 50s — Condition: Sealed

Hank Ballard definitely falls into the "one and only" category – especially with work as great as his sounds on this classic album for King Records! Hank sings in a style that's as badass as his look on the cover – as raw in these cuts as James Brown was during the same stretch for King – with an ability to both hit a hard groove with The Midnighters providing sharp R&B accompaniment – and also slide into some occasional heartbreaking numbers that were perfect for his raspy vocal approach. And although Hank had a few big hits for King in the 50s, this set's got lots more obscure numbers – showing that the genius of the young Ballard is a virtual bottomless well – on titles that include "I'm Crying Mercy Mercy", "I'll Keep You Happy", "I'll Pray For You", "Cute Little Ways", "Move Move Move", "She's Got A Whole Lot Of Soul", "So Good To Be Home", "House With No Windows", "Sugaree", and "Rain Down Tears".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(80s reissue pressing.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

James Brown

Soul On Top
King, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold
A different James Brown album – but a nice one! James doesn't sing soul, so much as jazz – in front of large backings by Louis Bellson, with arrangements by Oliver Nelson that are in his best 60s soul mode – and which give the album a very very groovy feel overall! King, 1967. Very Good
Raw soul, indeed – a term that could have been coined for James Brown's vocal approach, and which probably makes one of its first appearances here on a record! Eastbound Expressway
AVI, 1979. Near Mint-
Classic work from female disco trio Eastbound Expressway – an Ian Levine project done in a mode to rival the great female club trios from Philly – and one that comes off surprisingly well!
