Some Like It Modern

LP (Item 42349) Mercury, 1959 — Condition: Very Good+
The Three Sounds have always been more soulful than modern – and about the only thing "modern" about this pre-Blue Note release is the abstract painting on the cover! But that doesn't stop the record from being a great little batch of soul jazz piano tunes, played by Gene Harris and the early version of the Sounds that included bassist Andrew Simpkins and drummer Bill Dowdy. Titles include "Rat Down Front", "Mr Lucky", "Let's Dance", "Elbows & Armpits", and "There's Something Nice About The Rain".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(White label stereo promo pressing, with deep groove – a nice copy!)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Oscar Peterson Trio + One
Mercury, 1964. Very Good
Oscar Peterson's trio is augmented here by a famous guest – trumpeter Clark Terry, whose horn adds a nice bit of punctuation to the set, and makes the record a strong standout in the 60s catalogs of both players! The addition of Terry to the record is a great one – as Clark's rising ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gerry Mulligan

Profile Of Gerry Mulligan
Mercury, 1955. Very Good
A pretty obscure session by Gerry – recorded in 1955, and featuring Jon Eardly on trumpet, Zoot Sims on tenor, and Bob Brookmeyer on trombone. A great session from 1959 – one that features John Coltrane playing tenor in a combo that's billed as being led by altoist Cannonball Adderley – but which is really more of a Miles Davis combo, without Miles!
