Lush Life

LP (Item 42312) Prestige, 1957/1958 — Condition: Very Good+
Also available
John Coltrane — Lush Life ... CD 3.99

Strong work from John Coltrane's early years as a leader – even if the album is sort of a collection of tracks that Trane recorded for Prestige, instead of a discreetly separate session! Side one features Coltrane's tenor in a spare setting with Earl May on bass and Art Taylor on drums – playing mellow tunes like "I Love You" and "Like Someone In Love", as well as the original "Trane's Slow Blues". Side two features a blowing session mode – with Donald Byrd, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Louis Hayes – on the cuts "Lush Life" and "I Hear A Rhapsody".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Green label pressing.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Coltrane Time
United Artists, 1958. Very Good+
This is a repackaged version of an album that was originally issued under Cecil Taylor's name, under the title Hard Drive (and later Stereo Drive, or something like that). Impulse, 1960s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Truly the best of the best of Coltrane's years at Impulse – as the collection has a strong focus on the longer, more spiritual numbers that he was free to develop while working for the forward-thinking company. John Coltrane

Om
Impulse, 1965. Very Good Gatefold
A pure statement of being and essence – and one of John Coltrane's spiritual masterpieces from the 60s! The 1965 recording was one of Trane's most adventurous so far – as it featured just one album-length track, building up out of relatively free expressions from Coltrane in the studio ... Believer
Prestige, Late 50s/1964. Very Good-
A great title for this one – given how many believers found the path to John Coltrane in the 60s! Soprano Sax
Prestige, 1957. Very Good+
