If You're Ready Come Go With Me – The Super Funk Collection

LP (Item 4230) Groove Merchant, 1974 — Condition: Very Good
Just Sold Out!

LP, Vinyl record album

❔

Funky early 70s work by Jimmy McGriff – a mix of tight groovers and more open soul jazz numbers – all of which represent some of his best moments for the Groove Merchant label! Jimmy's got a lean, mean sound on these tracks – and even when the backings are full, they've got the tightness of a 70s soundtrack – nice and jazzy, and with a great funky punch on the bottom! The McGriff keyboard sound has plenty of room to roam around, even when the cuts are short – and titles include a great cover of "Ain't It Funky Now", plus "Super Funk", "Fat Cakes", "Dig It On", "Bug Out", "If You're Ready Come Go With Me", "Let's Saty Together", "The Bird", "Plain Brown Bag", "Jumpin' The Blues", "Tiki", and "Shuckin & Jivin".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original pressing. Cover has a peeled strip from tape removal across the front.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Jimmy McGriff

Blues For Mister Jimmy
Sue, Mid 60s. Very Good
Classic hard-wailing organ from Jimmy, pressed up nice and loud on this original Sue album. Most of the cuts are short, with the deep R&B groove that made his best Sue records really work. Titles include "Sho Nuff", "Turn Blue", "Bump De Bump", "Cash ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy McGriff

At The Apollo
Sue, Mid 60s. Very Good
A classic live set by McGriff – freer than some of his other singles for Sue, with an open-ended quality that really lets him do his thang! His group includes Larry "The Lar With The Flair" Frazier on guitar – a semi-mad talent from Chicago, inspired by George Freeman, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy McGriff

Mean Machine
Groove Merchant, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold
Sweet 70s electric work from Jimmy McGriff – material that's different than his grittier grooves of the 60s, but still plenty darn great! The style's clearly influenced by CTI – as Jimmy's using electric piano as much as organ – and is getting some fuller support in the backings ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy McGriff & Richard Groove Holmes

Giants Of The Organ In Concert
Groove Merchant, 1973. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Groove Holmes and Jimmy McGriff go head to head in this double-organ extravaganza! The set was recorded live in Boston in 1973, and it features some of the most furiously funky live organ grooving you'll find this side of Root Down – and a whole lot of super tight jazz jamming! The group's ... LP, Vinyl record album

George Freeman

Man & Woman
Groove Merchant, 1974. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of the more laidback albums from George Freeman's early 70s run – but still a great little set that shows the mellower side of his talents! Despite the sexy style of the cover, the sound here is relatively straight soul jazz – small combo work with Harold Mabern on acoustic piano, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lucky Thompson

Goodbye Yesterday
Groove Merchant, 1973. Very Good-
Goodbye Yesterday, hello 70s – as Lucky Thompson plays wonderfully here in a mode that's quite different than his early years – working in a cool group that includes Cedar Walton on electric piano and celeste, Larry Ridley on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums! While most cuts are ... LP, Vinyl record album

Michael Longo

900 Shares Of The Blues
Groove Merchant, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold
A killer electric piano jam from the great Mike Longo – stone funky, and one of his best albums ever! The whole thing's done in a really laidback style that's simply amazing – a lot like the best CTI work of the time, but somehow rougher, and with a darker edge. Longo riffs out on the ... Claude Bolling

French Jazz
Bally, 1956. Near Mint-
An early batch of tracks from French arranger Claude Bolling – probably best known for his later "jazz meets classical" work, but heard here in a great straight set from the 50s! The album features Bolling at the head of a largeish group that features Parisian players Roger Guerin, ... LP, Vinyl record album

George Shearing

I Hear Music
MGM, Early 50s. Near Mint-
Classic shearing from the 50s – with a wonderful mix of vibes – played by Joe Roland or Margie Hyams – plus guitar from Chuck Wayne or Richard Garcia. LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette Coleman

Body Meta
Artists House, 1978. Very Good+ Gatefold
Heavy duty stuff, and one of Ornette's best LPs from the 70's. Recorded in 1976, this is a perfect demonstration of the harmelodic style, with the whole group jaunting along in tight choppy bits. James Blood Ulmer's on guitar, and the sound is very dark and deep. Tracks include "Voice ... LP, Vinyl record album

Charles Mingus

Pre Bird
Mercury, 1960. Near Mint-
An unusual chapter in the label-hopping career of Charles Mingus – a one-off date recorded for Mercury right after Mingus' legendary sessions for Columbia! The format here may well be Mingus' most ambitious to date – as the album features larger groups than before, exploring a range of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bob Brookmeyer Quintet

Traditionalism Revisited
World Pacific, 1957. Near Mint-
Beautifully modernist material from the great Brookmeyer – performing here with a well-suited group that features Jimmy Giuffre and Jim Hall, plus the great Dave Bailey on drums. The album features older tracks done in a surprisingly fresh style, and the trio of lead players dance around ... LP, Vinyl record album
