❔

One of the hippest records ever cut by trumpeter Ted Curson – and that's saying a lot, because all his records are pretty darn hip! Curson's working in a quartet with Jim McNeely on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Steve McCall on drums – and the group's a lot tighter than some of Curson's other ones from the late 70s, grooving away with a slight nod to freedom, but also a hard jazz swing that never loses its drive. The vibe is great – soulful and soaring, but very focused too – and titles include "Dwacki Mun Fudalick", "Blue Piccolo", "Playhouse March", and "Song Of The Lonely".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Why Not (Japan), 1976. Very Good+
A seminal 70s set from the legendary Air trio – and one of their only non-American dates from the early years! Miles Davis

Bitches Brew
Columbia, 1969. Very Good- 2LP Gatefold
One of the few cases in jazz where an oft-played classic still resonates with power! Eddie Harris

Excursions
Atlantic, 1973. Very Good- 2LP Gatefold
A super-long batch of messed-up funky jazz from Eddie Harris! Blue Note, 1955/1959. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
This is the great Blue Note two-fer from the 70's that combines two rare Cecil Taylor albums from the 50's – one recorded for the Transition label, one for United Artists. First up is Jazz Advance – one of the best pre-1960 sessions by Cecil Taylor, recorded in Boston in 1956, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jazz Crusaders

Stretchin' Out
Pacific Jazz, 1964. Very Good+
The Jazz Crusaders at their early best – swinging hard, and virtually defining the sound of soul jazz on the west coast scene of the 60s! Air Lore
Arista/Novus, 1979. Near Mint-

Ear Wax/Wonderland, Late 70s. Sealed

Blackbyrds

Flying Start
Fantasy, 1974. Very Good
Not the band's first album – as you might think from the "start" in the title – but a classic batch of jazzy, funky, and soulful grooves from The Blackbyrds – one of those combos that few groups could match back in the 70s! The set's got a beautifully put-together feel ... LP, Vinyl record album

Black Smoke

Abraxas
Columbia, 1970. Very Good- Gatefold
In the past 30 years, this one's gone from being a fierce outpouring of the Bay Area underground, to a cliche of classic rock, to a brilliant example of west coast Latin rock/funk/fusion in action!
