Reflections

LP (Item 4202) Arista, 1981 — Condition: Near Mint-
Originally: 29.99
A great little album that's often overshadowed by its hit – the 15 minute "B-Movie", which was sort of an overly-wrought protest piece about how the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980 was going to turn America into a bad b-movie. Not that that track's bad – although its politics have certainly dated by now – but the real strength of the album are the jazzy numbers, written in Gil's beautiful righteous style forged in the soul jazz underground of the 70s. These include the stellar "Is That Jazz?", a contemplative track about the future of the art form, a mellow version of Bill Withers' "Grandma's Hands", the moody "Storm Music", and "Gun", a good groover with a message about the right to bear arms.  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a promo stamp, cut corner, hype sticker, light wear, clear tape holding the top seam, and is bent a bit at the top left corner.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Arista, 1983. Very Good
A real standout from Aretha Franklin's years on Arista – a set produced by Luther Vandross, with a soaring groove that really opens Aretha up nicely! In The Night Time
Buddah/Arista, 1978. Near Mint-
Smooth mellow soul by Michael Henderson – taking up where he left off with his work with Norman Connors, and proving that he was an even better vocalist than bassist. Funk In A Mason Jar
Arista, 1977. Very Good+
Smooth soulful jazz from Harvey Mason – one of his strong 70s winners for the Arista album, and a record that really brings a new level of class to his sound! Aretha Franklin

Aretha (1980)
Arista, 1980. Near Mint-
Classy later soul from Aretha Franklin – a set that's free from some of the too-commercial modes of other 80s work, but which still pushes the envelope nicely from her years at Atlantic! Johnnie Taylor

Eargasm
Columbia, 1976. Very Good+
A landmark album from Johnnie Taylor – a set that not only gave his career a giant boost, but which also helped shift southern soul into hip new territory in the late 70s! This is the second of two live albums that Marvin Gaye cut during the 70s – and in many ways, it's the better one! Starbooty
Elektra, 1978. Very Good+
A killer side project from Roy Ayers – recorded right around the same time as the Ramp album, but with a different feel over all – proof that the Ayers empire was really exploding at the end of the 70s! The vibe here is quite similar to some of Roy's own albums over at Polydor – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Taste Of Honey

Taste Of Honey
Capitol, 1978. Very Good+
Probably the most successful album the Mizell Brothers ever produced, and a fine set of uptempo groovers from this female soul duet! There's some nice jazzy moments underneath the catchy lyrics, and in a way, the album's style is sort of a blueprint for the sound that would emerge over the next ... LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny Guitar Watson

Giant
DJM, 1978. Very Good+
Not of Johnny's more famous albums, but it's plenty darn nice – and done in a wicked blend of spacey vocals and keyboards that's very much in the best Guitar Watson mode! There's a bit of a bump to a few tunes on the set, clearly a move to make it onto the dancefloor – but the album's ... LP, Vinyl record album
