Meditations

LP (Item 418419) Prestige, 1955 — Condition: Very Good+
Beautiful trio work by Elmo Hope – one of his first sessions as a leader, and while still quite modern, also a record that's done with a warmer, mellower feel than some of his other work – as you might guess from the cover image and the Meditations title! The group on the set features John Ore on bass and Willie Jones on drums – and tracks include some great originals that strongly display the unique Hope conception on the keys – a sound forged here in the time before his west coast sojourn, and echoing influences of Monk and Herbie Nichols, but also a strong sense of jazz piano tradition that colors the tunes nicely. Titles include "Elmo's Fire", "Blue Mo", "Huh", "Quit It", "Lucky Strike", and "All The Things You Are".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original 50th street NYC pressing, with RVG etch and deep groove! Cover has light wear, and a split bottom seam – but this is still a greta copy of this rare gem!)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Halleloo Y'All
Prestige, 1963. Very Good-
Red's usual trio bag is given a bit of a soul jazz twist (or perhaps we should say "a bit more of a soul jazz twist" since Red's always pretty darn soulful!) – in this set of tracks that has a slight gospel piano sound to it, and which also features Red playing organ on one track! ... Very tasty stuff indeed – one of the few rare sessions cut for Prestige by Chicago pianist John Wright – a very soulful player who emerged from the Windy City at the end of the 60s!
