Rockin' Roll Baby

LP (Item 4166) Avco, 1973 — Condition: Very Good

The third album by The Stylistics – and a set that's still very much in the high-harmony territory of their first two classics! Thom Bell's still very firmly on deck this time around – arranging, producing, and writing a good deal of the material too – and the Sigma Sound recording setting ensures plenty of key Philly help in the studio – just the right balance of musicians to get the album's mellow and uptempo tracks sounding their best! This is the kind of set that countless groups tried to copy back in the day, but hardly ever got this right at all – and titles include the sly number "Payback Is A Dog", plus "Love Comes Easy", "I Won't Give You Up", "Make It Last", "Only For The Children", and "Rockin' Roll Baby" – plus the massive crossover number "You Make Me Feel Brand New".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has light wear.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Stylistics

You Are Beautiful
Avco, 1975. Very Good+
A mid 70s album from the Stylistics which is not a great one but is has some moments. Some of the song titles are just plain goofy – "Funky Weekend", "The Day The Clown Came To Town" and "To Save My Rock 'N' Roll Soul" but there are a couple of nice slower tempo ... LP, Vinyl record album

Little Anthony & The Imperials

On A New Street
Avco, 1973. Very Good+
Wonderful work from Little Anthony – and a great update to his smooth 60s harmony sound with The Imperials! Anthony wisely employs the use of two of 70s top harmony arrangers on the album – using Thom Bell on one side, and Teddy Randazzo on the other – both of whom really help ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eric Mercury

Electric Black Man
Avco, Early 70s. Very Good+ Gatefold
Ouch! What a bad title! But the record's actually Eric Mercury's best – a blend of soul and rock styles, sung in his raspy voice, handled with arrangements by Paul Harris that have a nice righteous sound and a bit of funk in the mix. Titles include "Life Style", "Earthless&qu ... LP, Vinyl record album
Hi Records, 1972. Very Good+
A damn great bit of work from the legendary Al Green – maybe one of his best records ever – and in fact, maybe one of greatest soul albums of all time! Although Jerry Butler had the first hit with "Only The Strong Survive" – way back in the late 60s, when Gamble & Huff were using his career to first forge their new ideas of Philly soul, Billy Paul does a great job with the cut here, taking it into a smooth modern mode that ... Commodores

Hot On The Tracks
Motown, 1976. Very Good+
Early funk from the Commodores – back in the days when Lionel Richie could still get up and groove! Roy Ayers

You Send Me
Polydor, 1978. Very Good
A masterpiece – and don't pass it up! Sure, the date's a bit later than some of Roy's classic work, but the record's got a sound like no other – with a slow mellow jazzy style that shows Roy working at the height of his powers! There's some wonderful spacey production on the record ... LP, Vinyl record album

One of Jean's classic Philly albums, recorded after she left Doug Carn, and started to make records as a solo artist. Magic Love
West End, 1977. Very Good+
A classic set of disco grooves – initially recorded in Paris, then sweetened up strongly at the Sigma Studios in Philly! Phyllis Hyman
Buddah, 1977. Very Good
Far and away our favorite album by Phyllis Hyman – her first, and with lots of the same smooth jazzy soul touches you'd find in her work with Norman Connors!
