Duke Of Soul

LP (Item 4141) Checker, 1967 — Condition: Very Good+
Fantastic bit of soul by Gene Chandler, and despite the "hit" referred to in the title, the album's a great batch of stuff that doesn't really see the light of day that often! Includes his great remake of "Rainbow", titled "Rainbow 65", and featuring some amazing live material. Other nice ones include "Just Be True", "A Man's Temptation", "Night Owl", and "You Threw A Lucky Punch". Classic Chicago soul!  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

'80
Chi Sound/20th Century, 1980. Very Good+
A nice record of modern soul that got a bit overlooked at the time because of the poor fate of the Chi-Sound label. The record's filled with Chicago soul talent like Tom Tom 84, Sonny Sanders, and Carl Davis, and it's a good updating of Gene's Chicago soul sound towards a style that's more modern ... Girl Don't Care
Brunswick, 1967. Very Good+
A wonderful wonderful soul album from the great Gene Chandler – quite possibly our favorite work ever from this under-acknowledged Chicago singer! Chandler's way past his "Duke Of Earl" years on this record, and is hitting his stride as one of Chicago's best soul singers of the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Checker, 1972. Very Good
A collection of earlier work by Aretha Franklin – issued by Chess after her fame on Atlantic, but featuring tunes cut when a younger woman, working with famous father Reverend CL Franklin! Fontella Bass

New Look
Checker, 1965. Very Good+
With that whip in her hand, we're not gonna argue with Fontella Bass about her New Look in the photo – and we can definitely say that the whole classic album definitely lives up to her hip, powerful stance on the cover! Fontella's a singer who started in gospel, later sung jazz, but who ... LP, Vinyl record album
Solid Smoke, Mid 60s. Sealed
A great sampler of 60s Detroit soul produced by the fantastic Ollie McLaughlin! Motown, Late 60s/Mid 70s. Sealed 3LP Trifold
A great set of Stevie's best tracks for Motown! 3 LPs deep, with 40 tracks in all, mostly from the late 60s, with a handful of numbers from the early 70s, including a few goodies that are getting tougher to find on wax. Includes "Hey Love", "Angie Girl", "Yester-Me, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, Mid 70s. Near Mint-
Fantastic work from the second chapter of The Spinners – the moment when the group departed Motown, moved to Atlantic, and got some superb Philly soul treatment at the hands of Thom Bell! Thelma & Jerry
Motown, 1977. Sealed
A nice record pairing the vocal stylings of Thelma Houston and Jerry Butler. Butler and Hal Davis take partial credit for production and tracks include the Bee-Gee's "Love So Right", "Only The Beginning", Stevie Wonder's "Joy Inside My Tears", "Let's Get ... LP, Vinyl record album
Motown, 1983. Near Mint-
One of the strangest acts to come from Motown in the early 80s – and almost more of a new wave record than a soul one! The standout hit here is the title track "Somebody's Watching Me" – an odd electro tune that has Rockwell speaking/singing these paranoid lyrics with a vague ... LP, Vinyl record album
