❔
A very different album than usual for June Christy – one of her last for Capitol, and a very swinging, upbeat affair! As the title implies, June's singing a set of tunes made famous during the glory days of the big bands – tracks associated with Duke Ellington, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, and others – all given a nice reworking here by June, in a style that's got a hipper, swinging California kind of groove! Arrangers on the set are Bill Holman, Bob Cooper, and Shorty Rogers – and they all keep things light and above board – shaking away the bluer tones and quieter moods of some of June's other records, taking her vocals back to the highly swinging style that first brought her fame in the 40s. Titles include "Frenesi", "Time Was", "Good Bye", "Night In Tunisia", "Stompin At the Savoy", "Prelude To A Kiss", and "Skyliner".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(80s Japanese pressing, including insert – ECJ 70230.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Capitol, 1961. Very Good+
Darkly beautiful work from singer June Christy – a lesser-remembered gem from the end of her years at Capitol Records! The mood here is very much in keeping with the "night people" setting of the title – a lonely space of empty streets, open windows, and late night saloons ... LP, Vinyl record album
Capitol, 1959. Very Good+
A later Capitol gem by June – where she reprisies a number of classics from her early years with Stan Kenton – new versions of late 40s tunes, done here with Pete Rugolo arrangements that go a good way towards showing how both he and June had grown during the 50s. Titles include "H ... LP, Vinyl record album

June Christy

Misty Miss Christy
Capitol, Mid 50s. Near Mint-
One of June's all-time classics – and perhaps her most famous album, next to the sublime Something Cool. The set, like that one, was arranged and conducted by Pete Rugolo – whose icy and modern touches are the perfect foil for June's sad and dark voice. Familiar tunes are completely ... Capitol, 1953. Very Good
From its booze-soaked title cut, to its haunting selection of lonely ballads like "Midnight Sun" and "Stranger Called The Blues", this is one of the most fantastic vocal jazz albums of all time – and a record that we'd recommend instantly to anyone! June Christy has an ... LP, Vinyl record album

Nat King Cole

To Whom It May Concern
Capitol, 1959. Near Mint-
A great late album from Nat King Cole – one done with some wonderfully rich arrangements by Nelson Riddle, which unlock all the poise and class that Cole had developed during his 50s decade at Capitol Records! There's definitely a slight ear here towards the Johnny Mathis sound that was ... LP, Vinyl record album

Welcome To The Club
Capitol, 1959. Near Mint-
One of our favorite albums by Nat King Cole – done with a bit more depth and feeling than some of his other Capitol sets of the time – and some great jazzy backings, too! Arrangements are by Dave Cavanaugh, but there's almost a Basie-like quality to the group at times – never too ... LP, Vinyl record album
Capitol, 1962. Near Mint-
Pure crooning genius from Vic Damone – with fresh arrangements from Capitol maestro Jack Marshall! Marshall's work in the studio was often playful – sometimes a bit too much so, as on his own instrumental albums – but here he brings out a real boldness in Damone's voice, a ... Robert Mitchum

Calypso Is Like So
Capitol, 1958. Very Good+
Robert Mitchum singing calypso? Stranger things have happened, sure – and it's not so surprising when you read that Mitchum was actually a huge devotee of the music, and took his work in the genre very seriously. This great set was first issued by Capitol in the late 50s – and it's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dick Haymes

Rain Or Shine
Capitol, Mid 50s. Near Mint-
Sublime work from vocalist Dick Haymes – a singer who's best known for his early 40s work with big bands, but who reinvented himself tremendously during the 50s! Haymes is heard here in a spare, somber, very late nite style – somewhat boozy, and easily rivaling the work of Sinatra ... LP, Vinyl record album

Capitol, Late 50s. Near Mint-
One of Louie's greatest albums ever – a hard-swingin batch of vocal group tunes, with all the sound that made him famous!
