Soft Samba

LP (Item 4128) Verve, 1964 — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold

A dream of a record from Gary McFarland – lightly jazzy instrumentals with a warm bossa nova undercurrent! The style is incredible – a sweet blend of vibes, guitar, and even some light whistling – often also featuring wordless jazz vocals – scatting along with the groove in a melodic and lovely kind of way! The whole thing's incredibly charming, and even familiar tunes come across sounding quite different in McFarlands hands. Titles include "From Russia With Love", "More", "Emily", "La Vie En Rose", "The Love Goddess", and even a groovy take on "I Want To Hold Your Hand". For you true swingers, the cover includes directions for mixing a "Soft Samba Cocktail" (courtesy Spanish Sherry Institute)!  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono MGM pressing. Cover has a cutout hole.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Gary McFarland

Today
Skye, Late 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
Wild stuff – and very different than Gary McFarland's earlier albums! Today was recorded late in Gary's career, and is has him moving a bit away from jazz – into a more sunshine pop feel – one that still retains plenty of the bossa and breezy elements of his Verve work, but which ... Donald Byrd

Up With Donald Byrd
Verve, 1964. Very Good
A great album, and unlike anything else Donald Byrd ever recorded – almost mad hodgepodge of the styles Byrd used at Blue Note, as the session brings together funky soul jazz with vocal backings – linking the groove of At The Races with the choral stylings of A New Perspective! The ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, Mid 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
A collection of sides cut in the mid 60s by Wes during his association with Verve. Culled from the albums Movin' Wes, Bumpin', Goin' Out Of My Head and Tequila, these numbers all feature the larger arrangements that gave those albums a richer sound than his small group recordings, though Wes' ... Verve, 1964. Near Mint- Gatefold
A real treasure, and a record that may well be our favorite Jimmy Smith album for Verve – a masterful meeting of his smoking Hammond work with some swingingly sophisticated arrangements by Oliver Nelson and Claus Ogerman! Both Nelson and Ogerman bring a fuller spectrum of horn work to the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, Early 50s. Very Good
A classic 50s collection of Verve material by Charlie Parker – and one of those records that will definitely help you understand his genius right from the start! The lineup here is slightly large – wonderful arrangements by Joe Lipman that are a bit orchestral, with strings as well ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dizzy Gillespie

Have Trumpet Will Excite
Verve, 1959. Very Good+
Diz breaks past his bop playing, takes a bit of a turn towards swing-based material, and also hits this nice rolling groove that gives a bit of a peek at the way he'd sound in the 60's, when he had Lalo Schifrin on piano, and more of a Latin sound. He's backed here by Junior Mance on piano, Les ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Smith

24 Karat Hits
Verve, 1960s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A collection of 24 songs that are not necessarily popular because Jimmy Smith played them – they are, as the front cover indicates, some of the "all time best sellers". The tracks include songs from 12 previous Verve records and they include "Funky Broadway", "Walk ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, Late 50s. Very Good+
One of the classic Verve series of recordings from the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival, and an album that features one side of the Oscar Peterson trio with Ray Brown and Herb Ellis, plus a side of the trio joined by Jo Jones, Sonny Stitt and Roy Eldridge. 8 tracks in all, including "Will You Still ... Verve, 1961. Near Mint-
While actually not as electrifying as some of Dizzy's other albums from the time, this one's still pretty darn great, and features his great group with Leo Wright on alto and Lalo Schfrin on piano. The band grooves with a subtly Latinish vibe, and the tracks are nice and long long long. Titles ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dizzy Gillespie

Portrait Of Duke Ellington
Verve, 1960. Very Good+
A portrait of Duke, done by Dizzy – and one that's got a whole different feel than you might think! Gillespie's working here with arrangements by a young Clare Fischer – who takes Ellington's themes and recasts them with an even deeper sense of color and tone – one that pushes ... Verve, Mid 50s. Near Mint- 2LP
The stuff of legends, and one of the best sides that Webster cut for Verve in the 50s, this reissue adds a whole 'nother set of quartet sides, recorded with almost the same group, minus Herbn Ellis and replacing Stan Levey with Ed Thigpen. On the original LP the group's a quintet – with the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bob James

Two
CTI, 1975. Very Good Gatefold
A monster – and quite possibly one of the greatest Fender Rhodes albums of all time!
