Basie Land

LP (Item 412374) Verve, 1963 — Condition: Very Good+
Basieland in the 60s – a very nice place to be! This excellent Verve session features the highly pyrotechnic Basie 60s ensemble really letting loose – complete with great horn work by Frank Foster, Frank Wess, and Eric Dixon on reeds – all of whom bring a very soulful edge to the proceedings, and blow these strong sharp lines over the album's great arrangements from Billy Byers. Byers also wrote all the tunes too – making the set one of those great Basie albums that overflows with fresh new songs that continually redefine the Count's groove. Tracks are short and tight, but have some wonderful horn charts that really explode with magical energy – and titles include "Sassy", "Wanderlust", "Instant Blues", "Basie Land", "Big Brother", and "Yuriko".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Basie In Sweden
Roulette, 1962. Very Good+
One of the most hard-hitting Count Basie albums from the Roulette Records years – and that's saying a lot, given the power of Basie at the time! The set was recorded in Sweden, with a kind of triple-time energy that really has the whole thing burning right from the start – as the group' ... LP, Vinyl record album

Basie One More Time
Roulette, Early 60s. Very Good
The genius of Basie meets the genius of Quincy Jones – a 60s pairing that's every bit as great as the 50s pairing of Basie and Neal Hefti! Jones and Basie worked together in a number of settings during the 60s – including a very successful album for Frank Sinatra on Reprise – but ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chairman of The Board
Roulette, 1958. Very Good+
Way before Sinatra first grabbed the "Chairman Of The Board" title for his own musical persona, Basie laid great claim to the tag with this tight little album for Roulette! Blue Hodge
Verve, 1961. Very Good
One of the first Verve albums to push Johnny Hodges away from Ellington and into the soul jazz mode that served him well as a leader in the 60s – recorded here with Wild Bill Davis on organ, Sam Jones on bass, Louis Hayes on drums, and the great Les Spann on both guitar and flute! Getz Au Go Go
Verve, 1964. Very Good- Gatefold
A beautiful dreamy album that's quite different from the classic Getz/Gilberto collaboration – but which also shares much of that set's lyrical beauty!
