Lonely Man

LP (Item 4121) Columbia, Late 60s — Condition: Very Good+

An excellent album of uptown soul from Freddie – recorded after his work for Colpix, with arrangements by Belford Hendricks and Garry Sherman, in a sweet 60s New York mode! Freddie's vocals are great – much more mature than before, with a mixture of deep and sophisticated soul that really sends the tracks. Titles include "Lonely Man", "Giving You My Heart", "Blow Wind", "One More Time Before Igo", "I'm Too Far Gone To Turn Around", "Just One Look", and "I'll Try Again".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(360 Sound stereo pressing. Cover has light aging and some splitting in the top seam.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Chambers Brothers

New Time – A New Day
Columbia, Late 60s. Very Good+
This one has the Chambers working in a number of styles, sweating hard in a gritty version of Otis Redding's "I Can't Turn You Loose" and to some funky percussion and call-and-response vocals on "Do Your Thing", and grooving softly on "Guess Who" and others. Other ... LP, Vinyl record album

Philip Bailey

Chinese Wall
Columbia, 1984. Very Good+
A big breakthrough for Philip Bailey – and a record that was kind of a second-level explosion for the Earth Wind & Fire sound in the 80s! There's a definite crossover feel to the record – a style that takes Bailey's soulful vocals, and mixes them with lots of catchy hooks – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Aretha Franklin

Soul Sister
Columbia, 1966. Very Good+
Aretha Franklin's definitely growing into her role as a soul sister here – a later date for Columbia Records that hints a bit at the sounds to come on Atlantic! AC
Columbia, 1985. Very Good+
The best of a handful of albums that the one-time Prince bassist put out in the early 80s – a record that made a splash via the great Prince-penned "The Dance Electric" – possibly a blessing and a curse for AC, as Prince was so huge at the time that the record going public was ... Quite a different sound than usual for Blue Magic – but quite nice too! This album's an obscure effort from the end of the 80s – recorded years after the group's initial hits in the 70s, but still with some tremendous harmonies that are very much at the top of their game! Can't You Tell It's Me
Columbia, 1979. Very Good+
Fantastic mellow soul from Tyrone Davis – a great reminder that his vocals were still some of the burningest in 70s soul – sounding especially great in a record like this! Side one of the album's especially great – an all-mellow side that almost acts like some mini-suite of love ... LP, Vinyl record album

Maurice White
Columbia, 1984. Sealed
The only solo album ever recorded by Maurice White – an upbeat and soulful set that's right up there with his best 80s work in Earth Wind & Fire!
