Taking Care Of Business

LP (Item 411921) Prestige/Milestone, 1955 — Condition: Near Mint-
2LP Gatefold

Early bop work by Sonny Rollins – from his Prestige years! Like other Milestone two-fers that were issued in the 70s, this set goes back and collects work recorded within the same time frame, and comprises material that was otherwise issued on Work Time, Tenor Madness, Sonny Boy and Tour De Force, some of his finest hard bop sides from the mid 50s. Sonny's playing alongside Ray Bryant, George Morrow, Max Roach, John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones and Kenny Drew, with about half of the numbers quartet sides. 13 tracks in all: "There's No Business Like Show Business", "Raincheck", "There Are Such Things", "It's All Right With Me", "My Reverie", "Paul's Pal", "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World", "Tenor Madness", "When Your Lover Has Gone", "Ee-ah", "Sonny Boy", "B Swift" and "B Quick".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Prestige, Mid 50s. Very Good+
Nice album that contains a mid-50s session recorded by Rollins for Prestige – with a quintet that includes the Clifford Brown-Max Roach ensemble, with Rollins filling in the tenor spot. Richie Powell's on piano, and the whole group has a very tight "roots of hardbop" sort of sound. ... LP, Vinyl record album

A landmark album from Sonny Rollins – one that marked his comeback in the early 60s, after a brief period of retirement, and which also initiated a string of incredible recordings with guitarist Jim Hall. Despite the title, which seems a bit silly, the album's actually one of Sonny's best from the 70s – an open-ended live set, recorded with a group that features both electric and acoustic piano, plus guitar and electric bass in the rhythm section – making for a nice slightly funky groove ... Rollins Plays For Bird
Prestige, 1956. Very Good-
The tenor of Sonny Rollins pays tribute to the alto of Charlie Parker – in a landmark set that's one of Sonny's real standout 50s sessions for Prestige! A beautiful soundtrack to the dark British comedy of the same name – starring a young Michael Caine! A perfect example of the great skill that Prestige had for taking a good ensemble player, and putting him into a context that really let him open up in a manner that brought his best points to light!
