Jazz At The Philharmonic In Europe (brick cover)

LP (Item 41059) Verve, Early 60s — Condition: Very Good+

A great little live set – ostensibly a Dizzy Gillespie performance, but with some very strong guest stars! The core of the group is Diz's great one from the early 60s – with Lalo Schifrin on piano and Leo Wright on alto and flute, and they're joined by Stan Getz, JJ Johnson, and Candido for this tasty set of three long tracks: "Kush", "Sweet Georgia Brown" and "Bop 'N' Boogie".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Verve, Early 60s. Near Mint-
One volume of a four volume set, though Verve didn't number them. Recorded in concert one night in Denmark, this set is a Norm Granz production that transplants the JATP crew to Europe. While some of the other volumes feature larger groups blowin' and riffing on standards, this one has a small ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Krupa & Buddy Rich

Original Drum Battle
Verve, 1952. Near Mint-
A pretty darn great album – with a wonderful mix of JATP swing and strong-handed drumming by the leaders. The material was recorded at a Jazz At The Philharmonic show at Carnegie Hall in 1952, and although the main focus appears to be Krupa and Rich's drum work, there's actually some ... Sphere

Bird Songs
Verve, 1988. Near Mint-
A great one from this excellent 80s quartet – with Charlie Rouse on tenor, Kenny Barron on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Ben Riley on drums! LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Getz

Steamer
Verve, 1956. Very Good
The title may be a bit strangely put – as "Steamer" isn't a word that we'd necessarily think to use with the gently flowing tenor tone of Stan Getz – but that doesn't stop the album from being a great one, and perhaps in Getz-like terms, it might well have a bit more steam ... Verve, Mid 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
The stuff of legends, and one of the best sides that Webster cut for Verve in the 50s, this reissue adds a whole 'nother set of quartet sides, recorded with almost the same group, minus Herbn Ellis and replacing Stan Levey with Ed Thigpen. On the original LP the group's a quintet – with the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Getz

Focus
Verve, 1961. Near Mint- Gatefold
Oft-overlooked album that's actually one of Getz's most far-reaching of the 60s! Recorded in the year before he got caught up in his bossa pop frenzy, the record shows Getz as a darkly toned modernist, weaving out complex solos over the album's extended suite "Focus", written and ... Tenor Giants
Verve, 1957/1959. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A late 70s pressing of some classic Verve sides from the 50s, featuring two masters of the tenor, blowing side by side in a couple of small group settings: one with rhythm backing by Oscar Peterson, Herb Ellis, Ray Brown, and Alvin Stoller and the other with Jimmy Jones, Les Spann, Ray Brown and Jo ... Gabor Szabo

Spellbinder
Impulse, 1966. Very Good Gatefold
Breezy brilliance from the legendary Gabor Szabo – and one of the grooviest albums the Hungarian guitarist recorded during the 60s! The set's almost a tightening up of the style that Szabo first brought to prominence in his work with Chico Hamilton – a sound that's got roots in gypsy ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sam Rivers

Waves
Tomato, 1978/1989. Near Mint-
Fairly loft-oriented jazz session from Sam Rivers – but with a more focused approach than you might initially imagine.
