❔
Fantastic work from John Klemmer – hard-edged, exploratory, with a mix of spiritualism and soulfulness, and a few touches of easy soloing. Todd Cochran (Bayete) plays Fender Rhodes, Woody Theus is on drums, and Klemmer's got an echoplex hooked up to his tenor on a few cuts. The tracks were recorded in a number of different settings, with different personnel – but the whole thing's got a unified feel, and shows the depth of Klemmer's approach to a variety of styles. Titles include the Miles-esque jammer "Last Summer's Spell", plus "Rapture Of The Deep", "Sea Of Passion", "Prayer For John Coltrane", and "Love Song To Katherine".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Yellow label pressing. Cover has light surface wear.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Elektra, 1981. Near Mint- Gatefold
A smooth set from reedman John Klemmer, but a pretty darn soulful one too – and a great illustration of the way that Klemmer could still hold onto his roots a lot more strongly than some of his contemporaries! The backings are gentle and fusiony – often with some great keyboard work ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gary McFarland

Point Of Departure
Impulse, 1963. Near Mint- Gatefold
A great record – and one that's filled with so many wonderful little moments! The whole thing's a very cool, very off-beat set of jazz tracks recorded by vibist Gary McFarland, with a group that includes Jimmy Raney on guitar, Richie Kamuca on tenor, and Steve Swallow on bass – a ... John Coltrane

Love Supreme
Impulse, 1964. Near Mint- Gatefold
Maybe one of the greatest jazz albums of all time – a real breakthrough moment for the legendary John Coltrane, and the blueprint for generations of jazz records to come! Trane was already breaking down plenty of boundaries before Love Supreme – but he knocked it out of the park for ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bob Thiele & Gabor Szabo

Light My Fire
Impulse, Late 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Excellent grooviness – and typical of the mad instrumental LPs that showed up on Impulse when they weren't cutting high-minded jazz! The record has a nice mix of easy funky jazz and pop psychedelia – performed by a range of groovy players conducted by Bob Thiele, and featuring Tom ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold
Wonderful post-Paris work from Archie Shepp – a record that has him bringing more focus back into his work after sessions overseas – and also making some great use of the legendary Joe Lee Wilson on vocals! There's a feeling here that's a real change for Shepp, but a great one too ... LP, Vinyl record album

Yusef Lateef

Jazz Round The World
Impulse, 1963. Near Mint- Gatefold
Yusef Lateef explores a number of different world music rhythms on a mix of woodwind instruments that includes tenor, basoon, flute, oboe, and shanas. He's joined here by the great Richard Williams on trumpet, whose playing with Lateef is always excellent. The rest of the group's made up of some ... LP, Vinyl record album

Oliver Nelson

Sound Pieces
Impulse, 1966. Very Good- Gatefold
One of the most impressive albums ever from arranger Oliver Nelson – a set that really shows the full depth of his mighty talents! Side one features Nelson working with a larger orchestra – similar to the kind of ensemble he arranged for other artists in the 60s, but handled here with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chico Hamilton

Man From Two Worlds
Impulse, Early 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
A pivotal album for Chico – one that has him working with his hip group that included Charles Lloyd and Gabor Szabo, both of whom take Chico into a modal mode that would completely transform his sound! Lloyd's the center star on the album's version of his own "Forest Flower" – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1961. Very Good+ Gatefold
Sublimely spiritual work from the great John Coltrane – a live album, but one that's easily one of his most important contributions to music in the early 60s – and a set that we'd rank right up there with his best studio sides for Impulse or Atlantic Records at the time! The group here ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1961. Sealed
One of the all-time classics of early 60s mainstream jazz – and a beautiful record that showcases writing and arranging talents of Oliver Nelson! Nelson had been bumping around a variety of sessions before this one – as a leader, sideman, and arranger – but it was with this album ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Expression
Impulse, 1967. Very Good+ Gatefold
The first Impulse album issued after the early death of John Coltrane – and one of his last sessions for the label as well! The record's got a somber, introspective quality that almost hints at the darkness to come – a new way of reaching the spiritual planes that Coltrane was striving ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

Double Image
Moon (France), 1969. Near Mint- 2LP
Mind blowing! This is a 2 LP version of a live set from 1969, recorded in Paris with Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Dave Holland, and Jack DeJohnette. The sound on here is crazy, and goes waaaay out – farther out than anything we've ever heard by Miles. At times, the tracks break down ... LP, Vinyl record album
