Betcha

LP (Item 410130) Elektra, 1979 — Condition: Very Good+
Stanley Turrentine's blowing here amidst some soaring arrangements from Gene Page – set in a smoothly soulful territory that draws on all of Page's great work on the LA scene of the 70s, but which still keeps the voice of Stanley very upfront in the mix. There's a bit less of the Turrentine "bite" than on some of Stan's other 70s sets – even than on some of his other larger group sessions of the later part of the decade – but the whole thing's got a well-rounded quality overall, and smoothly sets a tone for a generation to come, even though most players could hardly match Turrentine's soulfulness. Titles include "Take Me Home", "Betcha", "Love Is The Answer", "You", "Long Time Gone", and "Together Again".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Pieces Of Dreams
Fantasy, 1974. Near Mint- Gatefold
A 70s soulful classic from the mighty Stanley Turrentine! Stan's not the bad "Mister T" on this set – he's more in a smooth, mellow mode – blowing over some nice soulful arrangements by Gene Page, ones that take the CTI funk approach, add in some strings, and create a bit of ... Stanley Turrentine

Up At Minton's Vol 1
Blue Note, 1961. Near Mint-
A fantastic early record from tenor giant Stanley Turrentine – a set that's completely hard-hitting, and which has a very different vibe than the sweeter sets he'd cut later in the 70s! Instead, this record is pure hardbop all the way through – with Turrentine matching labelmate Hank ... LP, Vinyl record album

Common Touch
Blue Note, 1968. Very Good+
A really great later Blue Note session from Stanley Turrentine – a small combo set that's almost a return to the format of earlier years! That's Where It's At
Blue Note, 1962. Near Mint-
Where it's at with Stanley Turrentine – circa 1962 – a time when the tenorist was really hitting on all burners, and turning out some tremendous work for Blue Note! The album's got Stan working with a special guest – a rare Blue Note appearance from pianist Les McCann, who's also ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lee Ritenour

Captain's Journey
Elektra, 1979. Near Mint-
A masterful fusion set from guitarist Lee Ritenour – one that expands his sound a bit more than usual by adding in vocals on a number of tracks – but in a way that really gets at the mainstream soul influences that bubble through his jazz work! The set features key vocal appearances ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ron Carter

Etudes
Elektra, 1983. Near Mint-
A warmly acoustic set from Ron Carter – an early 80s album for Elektra that continues the great run of work as a leader he first began in the 70s! Lee Ritenour

Rit
Elektra, 1981. Very Good+
Few people did soulful fusion better than Lee Ritenour back in the early 80s – and the guitarist always seemed to find a way to really link together all the different sounds of the electric genre – from heavy jamming to soulful grooving to a rock-like appreciation for a good hook! ... Best Is Yet To Come
Elektra, 1982. Very Good+
A set that strongly continues the special spirit that Grover Washington brought to his music during the Elektra Records years – as one of the few artists who really found a way to move forward from the style of 70s jazz funk, but not fall into some of the smoother jazz cliches that were about ... Ernie Watts

Look In Your Heart
Elektra (Japan), 1980. Near Mint-
A sweet little record that draws plenty from a double-headed power team – Ernie Watts on reeds, and the mighty Wayne Henderson on production!
