Too Bad/Funk

7-inch (Item 409275) Aware, 1973 — Condition: Near Mint-

7-inch, Vinyl record

2 nice ones from The Counts' earliest years on Aware! "Too Bad" is a vocal number that rolls and vamps with some weird jazzy changes – almost Latiny at times, as horns inflect a strange edge around the raspy vocals in the lead – and conga rolls along to push the bottom. "Funk" is heavier and funkier – with electric keys that vamp over a nice little wah-wah groove – and a sound that's much more in the pocket than some of the group's Aware work on LP!  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Wake Up/The Party Life
Aware, 1973. Near Mint-
Tight stuff from this Atlanta funk artist! "Wake Up" is a bit more progressive than his usual bag – but the real strange one is "The Party Life", a very mellow cut that's sort of a country soul number about a guy whose daughter is taken away by a pimp! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Cotillion, 1972. Very Good
Rare work by Garland – recorded away from Chicago, in Philly, at Sigma Sound, with production and songwriting by Bunny Sigler and Phil Hurtt, and arrangements by Norman Harris and Ronnie Baker. The combination of Green's bluesy vocals with a smooth Philly soul approach works very nicely ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Volt, 1974. Very Good
A really great single by this obscure Stax group that we wish got the chance to make a full LP! "Stop Doggin Me" is an easy tempo southern diva number – sung in a style that reminds us a bit of Ann Peebles, and with sweetly bubbling Memphis production that only enforces that sound! ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Event, 1975. Very Good
An archetypal Bus Stop cut from Fatback – a really great groover with clavinet riffing that gives the track a great electric vibe, and chorus vocals that send the groove over the top! "Gotta Learn" is pretty great too – hard drums loping along in a spooky little groove, one ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
