LP (Item 4082) Parachute/Casablanca, 1979 — Condition: Near Mint-

Excellent work from Randy Brown – a great singer with a massive talent for being both smooth and deep at the same time, something we'd reserve for a rare few, like Frankie Beverly or Teddy Pendergrass during their best periods. This album featuers Randy singing tracks written by Homer Banks and Chuck Brooks – who also produced the album – and the tunes are great little love songs with compelling but uncomplicated structures, in a manner that's similar to mid 70s work by Lou Courtney or Ronnie McNeir. The whole album's pretty darn solid all the way through – and titles include "Use It", "I Wanna Baby You", "I Thought of You Today", "I Was Blessed (The Day I Found You)", and "It Scares Me So".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Vintage UK pressing – a nice copy!)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Mouth To Mouth
Casablanca, 1980. Very Good+
A classic bit of club from Lipps Inc – an album that's got the group nicely stretched-out and extended – taking them way past the simpler sounds you might know from their hit single work! Ebony Rhythm Funk Campaign

Watchin' You, Watchin' Me
Chi Sound/United Artists, 1976. Very Good+
A perfect example of the old adage that the funkier the band's name is, the less funky their music will be! Not that the group's really that bad or anything – they're just not the all-out party jam you'd expect from an ensemble with "ebony" and "funk" in their name. The ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cleveland Eaton & The Garden Of Eaton

Keep Love Alive
Ovation, 1979. Very Good+
A mixture of funky jazz, soul, and disco – recorded with a host of studio players and a smooth jazzy finish. The record's trying to keep the groove going from Eaton's Instant Hip LP – which was quite a minor hit for him – and although we love the bassist as a jazz player, most of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Best Of Barbara Lewis
Atlantic, Mid 60s/1971. Very Good+
Some of the best non-Motown soul to ever come out of Detroit, and a brilliant example of the uptown soul sound of the 60's! Nearly every track's a winner, and this comp of Barbara's best 60's stuff includes lots of classics like "Baby, I'm Yours", "Hello Stranger", "Stop ... LP, Vinyl record album

Main Ingredient

Spinning Around
RCA, 1970. Very Good+
For some reason, RCA had a real penchant for repackaging and retitling a number of the albums cut by their big stars in the early 70's. This album's a repackaged version of the hard to find Tasteful Soul album, and it was released only a year or two after that one. It's got a different title and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Fresh
Epic, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
Sly's leaping into the air on the cover of this one – and for good reason too, given the overall groove of the set!
