Soul Of Eddie Harris

LP (Item 40805) Up Front, Early 60s/Late 60s — Condition: Very Good+

No real dates or notes on the cover, but the album appears to include some of Eddie's excellent early work for the Vee Jay label – a wonderful blend of soul jazz and slightly experimental phrasing, and the kind of groundbreaking material that got Eddie noticed very early on in his career. Titles include "WP", "Velocity", "WP", "ATC", "Exodus", and "Alicia".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has some ring and edge wear.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Eddie Harris

Free Speech
Atlantic, 1970. Near Mint-
Often overlooked, but a nice little record from Eddie's early electric period on Atlantic! The group is a very soulful one made up of Jodie Christian on electric piano, Louis Spears on bass, Billy Hart on drums, and Felix Henry on percussion. The overall sound is more restrained than some of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1976. Near Mint-
Eddie continues the funky groove begun on Instant Funk, and smoothed out over albums like I Need Some Money – and although jazz fans probably gave him hell for going this way, we think this is actually a pretty darn great album! Here Comes The Judge
Columbia, Mid 60s. Very Good+
A great lost album from Eddie! The record was one of his few cut for Columbia – recorded between his early years at Vee Jay and his hit years at Atlantic – and it's an excellent little batch of cuts, with a tight Chicago soulful grooving sound, and a strong approach that mixes hardbop ... Live At Newport
Atlantic, 1971. Very Good-
Very cool sounds from the amazing Eddie Harris – a live set, cut at the popular Newport Jazz Festival – but one that's arguably even freakier and more freewheeling than some of Eddie's studio work for Atlantic! Eddie's horn is really plugged in for the set – a Varitone, which is ... LP, Vinyl record album

Explosive Eddie Harris
Vee Jay/Sunset, Early 60s/Late 60s. Very Good+
Although this set was issued on Sunset during the late 60s, it's most likely comprised of material recorded for Vee Jay earlier in the decade – when Harris was working in a groundbreaking style that mixed soul jazz and exoticism, into an amazing blend that still deserves huge recognition ... Atlantic, 1968. Near Mint-
Great stuff from one of Eddie Harris' greatest periods! This one was cut in the late 60s – when Eddie was creating his famous electrified Varitone sound – unique among other jazz players in that it actually added a lot to Eddie's work, instead of detracted from it (as with some other ... Instant Death
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good+
Damn great work from the amazing Eddie Harris – a record that's got a perfect blend of jazz and funk, but still holds onto more righteous elements too! Atlantic, 1973. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A super-long batch of messed-up funky jazz from Eddie Harris! A far-reaching early gem from Roy Ayers – a set that's much more jazz-based than his later work, and a record that has him touching base with the Blue Note and Strata East sides of the jazz spectrum!
