Lovingly Yours

LP (Item 407802) Spring, 1976 — Condition: Very Good+

A great point in Millie Jackson's career – recorded when she was picking up more confidence and class, but not going too far into that badass mode of later years! The sound here is still mostly southern soul, but Millie and co-producer Brad Shapiro have warmed it up a lot – bringing in some of the clubbier touches that were bubbling through the Atlanta scene of the mid 70s – smoothing things out, but in a way that still has Jackson's heartfelt soul at the heart of the record. Both The Moments and Brandy sing backing vocals on some cuts, and titles include "From Her Arms To Mine", "A Love Of Your Own", "You Can't Turn Me Off", "I'll Be Rolling", "Help Me Finish My Song", "Body Movements", "I'll Live My Love For You", and "Something Bout Cha".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has light wear and some pen.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Millie Jackson

Still Caught Up
Spring, 1975. Very Good
A great follow up to Mille Jackson's classic Caught Up album – but one that's also a key turning point too! The theme here is the same as the album before – with tunes that have a woman "caught up" in love and all of its tangles – but the sound is also bolder, more ... LP, Vinyl record album

Millie Jackson

Caught Up
Spring, 1974. Very Good+
Seminal 70s southern soul from Millie Jackson – a record that's head and shoulders above most of what she recorded in later years! Before she got all naughty and raunchy, Millie Jackson was one of the best female soul singers to come out of the south – and this album's a work of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Fatback Band

Night Fever
Spring, 1976. Sealed
A key turn in the groove for The Fatback Band – one that has the group getting a good dose of "night fever", and smoothing out their funk for the 70s disco crowd! Yet although clubby, the record's still plenty funky – a refinement of the groove first started on Yum Yum, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Spring, 1972. Sealed
A big one for Joe – and a marked shift after his southern soul recordings of earlier years. For this one, Joe got on the Philly train early, and hired Gamble & Huff to put the whole thing together with a tight smooth soul groove. The group's got greats like Norman Harris, Vince Montana, ... Fatback Band

NYCNYUSA
Spring, 1977. Near Mint-
A fantastic bit of funk from Fatback – and one of those records that still makes us scratch our heads, and say "Man, how can they make music this tight?" The sound is impeccable – bass and drums really right on the money, with a focus that's a huge influence on countless acts ... LP, Vinyl record album

Act One (Act 1)

Act One
Spring, 1974. Sealed
An obscure soul group, but a great one – equally at home with a fragile harmony tune as they were with more uptempo groovers for the dancefloor! This one and only album from Act One is a perfect illustration of the best two sides of the east coast indie soul scene of the early 70s – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Joe Simon

Sounds Of Simon
Spring, Early 70s. Very Good
Classic Joe Simon – smooth, soulful, and with slight bits of down-home country in the mix. John Richbourg produced the album, which was recorded at Music City in Nashville – a key example of the strength of that city's contribution to the ever-expanding sound of southern soul in the ... Minnie Riperton

Perfect Angel
Epic, 1974. Very Good-
Minnie Riperton's first album for Epic – and the record that broke her from a hip Chicago underground artist into one of the seventies' biggest female soul stars! The record moves past the baroque soul of Minnie's early years with Rotary Connection and Charles Stepney – and hits a mix ... LP, Vinyl record album

Parliament

Trombipulation
Casablanca, 1980. Sealed Gatefold
Often overlooked, but a very tasty album of late grooves from Parliament – not as much of a major hit as their previous records, but maybe even better because of that! The album's got the group's sound merging a bit with the Funkadelic vibe – that post-psych style of the George Clinton ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gil Scott-Heron

Reflections
Arista, 1981. Very Good+
A great little album that's often overshadowed by its hit – the 15 minute "B-Movie", which was sort of an overly-wrought protest piece about how the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980 was going to turn America into a bad b-movie. Not that that track's bad – although its ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bohannon

Insides Out
Dakar, 1974. Very Good-
A wonderful early record from Bohannon – and with a very different feel than usual! Although most of Bohannon's work from the time is up-tempo and funky, side two of this album has some amazing slow spacey cuts – done with a drum sound that's still quite hard, but just slower than ... LP, Vinyl record album

Isley Brothers

Go All The Way
T Neck, 1980. Very Good- Gatefold
It's the end of the 70s, and the Isleys are still going strong – keeping it real by dropping some of the fake funk of a few years before, and going for a smooth soul sound that would be one of their biggest strengths during the early 80s. This sound can be heard to perfection on the tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album
