Tender Moving Swinging Aretha Franklin

LP (Item 40739) Columbia, 1962 — Condition: Very Good-
Hip stuff from Aretha's early years – mostly jazzy, and sung to arrangements by Robert Mersey. Tracks are mostly standards – including "Don't Cry Baby", "Try A Little Tenderness", "Just For A Thrill", "God Bless The Child", "How Deep Is The Ocean", and "I'm Wandering" – but as usual, Aretha makes them all her own!  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Get It Right
Arista, 1983. Near Mint-
A real standout from Aretha Franklin's years on Arista – a set produced by Luther Vandross, with a soaring groove that really opens Aretha up nicely! Luther's more in the mode here of his 70s club productions than his 80s hits – that warm, midtempo vibe that's full of lush moments, but ... LP, Vinyl record album

Aretha (1980)

Classy later soul from Aretha Franklin – a set that's free from some of the too-commercial modes of other 80s work, but which still pushes the envelope nicely from her years at Atlantic! Soul Sister
Columbia, 1966. Very Good+
Aretha Franklin's definitely growing into her role as a soul sister here – a later date for Columbia Records that hints a bit at the sounds to come on Atlantic! Columbia, Mid 60s. Very Good+
Despite the title, this isn't really Aretha's greatest hits – as it includes no numbers from the Atlantic years – but it is a pretty good selection of Aretha's earlier work for Columbia, and features some real gems that should have been bigger hits than they were. One of Aretha Franklin's greatest records – and a complicated batch of jazzy tunes that features arrangements and production by Quincy Jones! Columbia, 1962. Very Good+
Pretty great stuff by Aretha – despite what the pro-Atlantic Records books say! The record is one of the first she cut with John Hammond at Columbia, and although it's not in the classic soul mode of the Atlantic sessions, it's a darn nice batch of bluesy jazz tracks that would still stand ... A great little record from Aretha – and on that always seems to get overlooked! A hip little live date from Aretha Franklin – one that's got a very jazzy feel, and some great small combo backings! Powerlight
Columbia, 1983. Very Good+
The Powerlight is burning bright – Maurice White, Philip Bailey, and the rest of the group still very much in classic formation! A stone classic from The Manhattans – still going strong long into the 70s with a classic harmony approach!
