Earth Wind & Fire — Best Of Earth Wind & Fire Vol 1 (with bonus tracks) ... CD 4.99
Fantastic stuff through and through – and almost a "best of" best of collection from the 70s! The album's a key illustration of the genius of Earth Wind & Fire on Columbia Records – because by the time the set was released in 1978, most of the tracks were already well-known hits – but still had a soulful power and righteous undercurrent that few other chart acts could match. Maurice White, Charles Stepney, and the others have a perfect way of holding onto their deepest inspirations while honing their sills in the studio – and the results of that commitment are heard beautifully on tracks that include "Got To Get You Into My Life", "Shining Star", "Getaway", "Can't Hide Love", "Fantasy", "Reasons", "September", and "That's The Way Of The World".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has some edge & ring wear.)

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Marlena Shaw

Acting Up
Columbia, 1978. Near Mint-
By this point in her career, Marlena has shed most of her roots as a jazz singer – but she's still singing with a lot of class and poise, bringing a sophistication to modern soul that made her one of the better singers on Columbia at the time, even if it probably did keep her off the charts. ... Trust Me
ARC/Columbia, 1979. Near Mint-
Great stuff – and one of DJ Rogers' most perfectly realized albums! Johnny Kemp

Secrets Of Flying
Columbia, 1988. Very Good+
A killer second set from Johnny Kemp – and a great showcase for the talents of a young Teddy Riley too! Teddy helped out with the album's leadoff track – the excellent "Just Got Paid", one of those 80s soul numbers that broke big right of the box – and which has gone ... LP, Vinyl record album

Rejoice
Columbia, 1977. Very Good
A huge hit for both The Emotions and Maurice White – whose Kalimba Productions handled this album in the same hit mode they'd been using for Earth Wind & Fire! Cheryl Lynn

Cheryl Lynn
Columbia, 1978. Near Mint-
Massive work from the great Cheryl Lynn – and a key bridge between late 70s disco and the newer grooves of the 80s club scene! The album's a mix of midtempo groovers with a few mellower tracks – and it's got a tight, slightly jazzy sound that was very fresh at the time, and which still ... LP, Vinyl record album
