Basic Miles – The Classic Performance Of Miles Davis

LP (Item 40727) Columbia, Late 50s/Early 60s — Condition: Very Good+

A great collection of Miles' classic work for Columbia – one that features a few really hard to find gems! To us, the highlight is 2 tracks – "Stella By Starlight" and "On Green Dolphin Street" – both of which are subtle modal gems lifted from Miles' rare Jazz Track albums, performed by a hip group that includes John Coltrane on tenor, Bill Evans on piano, Cannonball Adderley on alto, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Those 2 tracks sum up all that is excellent about Miles – but you also get some other great ones, like "Devil May Care", "Budo", "Little Melonae", "Miles Ahead", and "Fran-Dance".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original 70s pressing. Vinyl has a small mark that clicks a bit on "On Green Dolphin Street". Cover has hype and tracklist stickers.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Columbia (Japan), 1975. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A seminal 70s side from Miles Davis – originally a Japanese recording, and one that returns to the solid push of the initial electric years! Capitol, Late 40s/Early 50s. Very Good+
Legendary early work from trumpeter Miles Davis – late 40s sessions for Capitol Records that are completely different than the bop material he was cutting with Charlie Parker and on his own! Blue Moods
Debut, 1955. Sealed
An odd little session for Miles Davis – playing here with a great group, but one that's made up of musicians who are all uncommon sidemen for him, even at this early point in his career! Tutu
Warner, 1986. Very Good+
A nice collaboration between Miles and Marcus Miller from the latter part of Miles career. As much of the recording here is overdubbed, with many multiple instruments played by Miller, it doesn't have the improvised vibe of Miles' classic performances, but the songwriting and arrangements are head ... Bitches Brew
Columbia, 1969. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
One of the few cases in jazz where an oft-played classic still resonates with power! In A Silent Way
Columbia, 1969. Very Good
There's nothing "silent" here – as the album's a bold entry in the electric years of Miles Davis – one that still features contributions from Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Tony Williams – but which also expands the lineup considerably – really reaching out ... LP, Vinyl record album

Collection of earlier Miles recordings for Prestige, put together under as a 2LP 70s set, with good notes, and a lot of great material from the days when he was getting longer time for tracks in the studio, and developing a lot more as a player from his earlier sides with Bird and for Blue Note. ...
