LP (Item 40723) Epic, 1980 — Condition: Near Mint-

A real standout in the early solo years of Patti Labelle – and a great set that reunites the singer with New Orleans legend Allen Toussaint – who'd previously worked some magic with Patti and the Labelle trio! Toussaint really grounds Patti's vocals wonderfully – giving them a solid footing that moves past the pop and disco of previous records, but which also doesn't just resort to New Orleans cliches, either. Either Toussaint or Labelle wrote most of the songs on the record – and together, they find a fresh batch of material that really helps establish the singers as one of the greatest female voices in soul. The whole album's a classic – well-balanced between mellow and upbeat numbers – and titles include "Find The Love", "Get Ready", "Give It Up", "Release", "I Don't Go Shopping", "Ain't That Enough", and "Don't Make Your Angel Cry".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Patti Labelle

Tasty
Epic, 1978. Very Good
A real classic from the great Patti Labelle – one of the lady's first few albums as a solo act, and a set that definitely marks her step forward into a whole new sort of sophisticated soul! Some of the funkier, grittier touches of the Labelle years are in place – but Patti's also got ... LP, Vinyl record album

Patti Labelle

Spirit's In It
Philadelphia International, 1981. Very Good+
Smooth early 80s work from Patti – a bit over the top at times, but nicely restrained at others. Despite the fact that Patti's in the hands of top Philly International talents like Gamble & Huff, and Dexter Wansel – the effort's still very much her own, in full diva mode over a ... Jacksons

Triumph
Epic, 1980. Very Good+
One of Michael Jackson's last albums with his famous brothers – a record that was cut in between the two Quincy Jones albums (Off The Wall and Thriller) that would catapult him to megastardom! This set is still an all-Jacksons affair – produced and written by the whole group, and put ... LP, Vinyl record album

Michael Jackson

Thriller
Epic, 1982. Very Good+ Gatefold
Arguably the last true moment of genius in Michael Jackson's career – a record that sold a bazillion copies around the world – and for plenty good reason! Mother's Finest

Mother Factor
Epic, 1978. Very Good
One of the funkiest sets ever from Mother's Finest, and maybe our favorite album from the group's late 70s run on Epic Records! Production is by Skip Scarborough, who brings up some of the group's more soulful currents, but without losing their rocking impulses from before – and singer Joyce ... LP, Vinyl record album

Betty Wright

Wright Back At You
Epic, 1983. Very Good+
Betty Wright looks a lot different on the cover than during her early Alston Records years – and she sounds a lot different here, too – but in a way that really has the soul singer stretching out her wings! Most of the record was handled by Marlon Jackson – of Jacksons fame ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sly & The Family Stone

There's A Riot Goin' On
Epic, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold
A wonderful album from Sly and crew – moving way past the straight funk approach of earlier records, into a complicated crossover soul style that's filled with warmth and righteousness. Heatwave

Candles
Epic, 1980. Very Good
Killer soul from Heatwave – a tight little group who definitely made the UK proud at the end of the 70s! The album's a bit more obscure than the group's first few, but the sound is very much the same – a warmly grooving approach that's neither too disco, nor too sleepy – always ... Joe Tex

Rub Down
Epic, 1978. Very Good+
Surprisingly nice funky disco work from Joe Tex – still recording here with classic producer Buddy Killen, but using some warmer arrangements from Bergen White, done in a sweet Nashville take on the 70s sound of Philly! The backings are large, with strings over some electric rhythms – ... LP, Vinyl record album
