Cecil Taylor Unit

LP (Item 4060) New World, 1978 — Condition: Near Mint-
Gatefold
Temporarily Out Of Stock

LP, Vinyl record album

✈
❔
The Cecil Taylor Unit here is composed of Taylor, Jimmy Lyons on alto, Raphe Malik on trumpet, Ramsey Ameen on violin, Sirone on bass, and Ronald Shannon Jackson on drums. The three songs performed are "Idut", "Serdab", and the nearly 30 minute-long "Holiday En Masque"  © 1996-2022, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has light wear and some aging inside the gatefold.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

United Artists, Early 60s. Very Good+
R&B guitarist Tiny Grimes recorded this LP around the time that he was doing a number of other jazz comeback LPs (most notably for Prestige). This set's a pretty stripped-down session that has Grimes' guitar mostly in the lead, with organ accompaniment by either E.S. Swanston or L.S. Williams ... LP, Vinyl record album

Freddie Hubbard

Night Of The Cookers Vol 1
Blue Note, 1965. Very Good+
A landmark set for Blue Note – one that features Freddie Hubbard working in raw, firey, freewheeling territory – given space that few other players at the label were getting at the time! The two volume set features tracks recorded live at Club La Marchal in Brooklyn – and have ... LP, Vinyl record album

Elvin Jones

Mr Jones
Blue Note, 1972. Very Good+
A overlooked gem in Elvin Jones' Blue Note career – and an album that's virtually the blueprint for the Stone Alliance sound forged later in the decade by bassist Gene Perla and reedman Steve Grossman! Don Patterson with Booker Ervin & Sonny Stitt

Patterson's People
Prestige, 1965. Very Good+
A great groover from Don Patterson – cut in a trio format, with an open-ended style that lets the players kick back and play, in the sort of free and easy setting you'd hear in a hip small club. Patterson's organ is backed by his usual drummer Billy James, and 4 of the album's 5 tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album

Clifford Brown & Max Roach

At Basin Street
EmArcy, Mid 50s. Very Good+
About as classic as you can get for the Brown/Roach group – recorded at Basin Street with a group that includes Richie Powell on piano, Sonny Rollins on tenor, and George Morrow on bass. Bohannon

Insides Out
Dakar, 1974. Very Good+
A wonderful early record from Bohannon – and with a very different feel than usual! Although most of Bohannon's work from the time is up-tempo and funky, side two of this album has some amazing slow spacey cuts – done with a drum sound that's still quite hard, but just slower than ... Olympic Runners

Don't Let Up
London, 1976. Near Mint-
One of the best-remembered albums from the Olympic Runners – not the shorts-clad ladies on the front cover, but a UK funk combo with a mighty sharp edge! Barra Limpa
Verve, 1967. Very Good+ Gatefold
Incredible work from Luiz Henrique – one of our favorite singers of the 60s bossa era, heard here with some completely sublime arrangements! Millie Jackson

Caught Up
Spring, 1974. Good
Seminal 70s southern soul from Millie Jackson – a record that's head and shoulders above most of what she recorded in later years!
