Thurber Carnival – Original Cast Recording

LP (Item 40563) Columbia, Early 60s — Condition: Sealed

One of the hipper sides of Broadway during the big hit years, even if it is pretty goofy! The musical features songs and routines based on the work of cartoonist/humorist James Thurber, set to jazz backings by Don Elliott. The whole thing's not as bad as you might think – and some numbers end up being like a Laugh-In for the early 60s. Players include Alice Ghostly and John McGiver, and the whole thing was conceived and directed by Burgess Meredith!  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Stereo pressing. Cover has a small corner cut.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Reivers
Columbia, 1969. Very Good+
A pretty lush John Williams score to this period piece based on William Faulkner's The Reivers – in a version that starred Steve McQueen. The overall feel is actually in keeping with Williams' more successful later work – and the tunes here have all the drive, emotion, and catchy ... LP, Vinyl record album

Not the funkiest Sesame Street record you'll come across, but still pretty darn hip, and one that makes us wonder why children's TV is so darn lame these days. Original versions of numbers that really take us back are interspersed with dialogue lifted from the show, great for sampling, scratching ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jack Ackerman/Teo Macero

Faces
Columbia, Late 60s. Near Mint-
Like the music in most of John Cassavetes films, this LP's a weird mish mash of styles, sounds, and snippets – but it's also got a very emotional edge to it, like all of Cassavetes' films. Jack Ackerman did most of the music, and Teo Macero arranged and conducted all of it. Weird stuff, but ... LP, Vinyl record album

Quiller Memorandum
Columbia, Mid 60s. Very Good+
A sweet little soundtrack by John Barry – very different than the full-on style he used for James Bond – but equally groovy in its own sort of way! The music was written for a spy thriller starring Alec Guiness, George Segal, and Max Von Sydow – a moody film that's handled here ... LP, Vinyl record album

Barry conducts versions of his famous soundtrack themes from the 60s – as you'd guess from the title – taking them in different directions than on the original recordings, and coming up with some nice moody readings that show the direction he was heading in the late 60s.
