Gimme Something Real

LP (Item 40513) Warner, 1973 — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold
One of our favorite albums from this legendary duo – Nick Ashford & Valerie Simpson's first album for Warner Brothers, and compared to the numbers moved by biggest hits, you could call this one a hidden gem – filled with near perfect mellow soul jams and more sweetly soaring groovers alike! There are moments that steer it into more of a rootsy style, kind of an intimate take on the LA soul sound with easy going, elegant backings and production that's nicely tailored to voices, particular Valerie's lovely vocals – but those lead to bigger emotional payoff that hit you deep! This is an underappreciated early effort from the duo as a headlining act, and finds them setting up to change the sound of R&B to come! Titles include "Can You Make It Brother", "Bend Me", "Gimme Something Real", "I'm Determined", "I Need Your Light", "Anywhere", and "Have You Ever Tried It".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Ashford & Simpson

Musical Affair
Warner, 1980. Near Mint-
Near-perfect work from Ashford & Simpson – really grooving in full powerhouse mode here, and never missing a beat! By all rights, the team should have run out of steam by this point, but the album's another winner from their sublime Warner years – caught in a unique space between ... LP, Vinyl record album

Vanity 6

Vanity 6
Warner, 1982. Very Good
The only record from this group that would sort of morph into Apollonia 6, one of many Prince vehicles during the 80s. As you'd hope from a Prince side project, the tracks here bubble with his new wave/pop/funk crossover, though really the hit "Nasty Girl" is pretty much the only ... LP, Vinyl record album

LaBelle

LaBelle
Warner, 1971. Very Good
A real breakthrough in female soul for the 70s – the initial album from Labelle – a set that's very different material than the group were doing on their girl group singles in the 60s! The trio here is legendary – Patti Labelle, Nona Hendryx, and Sarah Dash – three ... LP, Vinyl record album

Prince

Prince
Warner, 1979. Near Mint-
An overlooked record in the grand scheme – which is unforgivable in our book! This self-titled album is Prince's second album, and already his vision is becoming a little more focused, and you can really hear the seeds of his later efforts – a really remarkable, unique, and fascinating ... Mike Theodore Orchestra

Cosmic Wind
Westbound/Warner, 1977. Very Good+
Mike's come a long way from his early soul days with Dennis Coffey – working here to lay down a set of spacious disco tunes with a dreamy finish – really stretching out with the same sort of glide you'd find in the best Philly club at the time! The record's actually quite strong on the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Graham Central Station

Mirror
Warner, 1976. Near Mint-
Larry Graham and crew are definitely going for a fuller sound on this set – starting off the record with a funky marching band, in Tusk-like fashion – then rolling into some bass-heavy funk that tops even their previous records for tightness! The groove is a key element in the growth ... LP, Vinyl record album

Randy Crawford

Now We May Begin
Warner, 1980. Very Good+
A great little album cut by Randy during the height of her career! She'd just broken big with her vocals on "Street Life" by the Crusaders – and although that track's not on here, the Crusaders team of Wilton Felder, Stix Hooper, and Joe Sample produced the album, and have given it ... Chaka Khan

Chaka
Warner, 1978. Near Mint-
The very first solo album from Chaka Khan – recorded after a great 70s run in Rufus, and an instant-classic that showed the world that she might be an even more amazing artist on her own! All those fantastic vocals from the previous albums with Rufus seem to get even more center stage action ... LP, Vinyl record album

Willie Hutch

Midnight Dancer
Whitfield/Warner, 1979. Near Mint-
A sweet mix of clubby tracks and mellower moments from Willie Hutch – and an overlooked gem from his late 70s years on Whitfield Records! The set's got Willie definitely digging some of the disco styles of the time, but in a way that's never sellout at all – as his vocals and guitar ... LP, Vinyl record album
Paisley Park/Warner, 1991. Very Good+ 2LP
A big new chapter for Prince in the 90s – his first set with the New Power Generation, and a record that definitely has him amping up his game for the decade! There's maybe a bit more sampling here, and a groove that certainly has one ear open for the younger sound of R&B at the time ... LP, Vinyl record album

Candi Staton

House Of Love
Warner, 1978. Very Good+
A perfect pairing of Candi Staton and producer Dave Crawford – that key southern soul talent who helped Candi and a few select others really step into the American soul mainstream at the end of the 70s! Candi's still got all the deep roots in her vocals – including that incredible ... LP, Vinyl record album
