I Wanna Be Selfish

LP (Item 40509) Warner, 1974 — Condition: Very Good+
Also available
Ashford & Simpson — I Wanna Be Selfish (with bonus track) ... CD 6.99

Stone classic early work from Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson – really moving past the Motown sound – stepping wonderfully into a hip style of soul that would have a huge effect on the direction of R&B in the 70s! I Wanna Be Selfish is actually a very giving effort from the unstoppable duo, mixing intimate numbers with more sweeping sounds – some that borrow the soaring elements of gospel soul, others more mellow and delicate. Ashford & Simpson wrote terrific soul songs as often as many of us wash our hair, and this record's a prime batch! Titles include "Ain't That Somethin", "Don't Fight It", "Ain't Nothin But A Maybe", "Spoiled", "Everybody's Got To Give It Up", and "Main Line".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Street Opera
Capitol, 1982. Very Good
Dang, these guys could never miss! Even in later years, Ashford and Simpson were still going strong – working here in a wonderfully mellow style that's as soulful for the moment as their mid 70s groovers were for that time. The album's got a sweet modern style that's pretty much in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Come As You Are
Warner, 1976. Near Mint-
A mid 70s winner from Ashford & Simpson – one of their earlier efforts, and a record that finds them fleshed out as a top notch act of their end – even if it'd be yeas before they'd net the kind of huge chart success that they deserved! Prince

Controversy
Warner, 1981. Sealed
Classic Prince – an album that signaled an end to the first part of Prince's storied career, leaning heavily on his fascination with new wave, mixed with the r&b grooves and 70s funk of his earliest LPs. Prince is definitely in a transitional mode here, the easy politics of the punk era ... LP, Vinyl record album

A lost bit of modern soul from Warner Brothers' great early 80s run in the soul business – tight, grooving, and without cliche on most tracks – a really well-done debut that was no doubt a needless victim of the shifting sands of the record business at the time!
