Dizzy Gillespie Story

LP (Item 40092) Savoy, Late 40s — Condition: Sealed
Originally: 9.99
Classic Savoy bop work from Diz – featuring some sides cut with the orchestra of Johnny Richards, plus some cut with the "Bepop (sic) Boys", a group that includes Milt Jackson, James Moody, Hank Jones, Dave Burns, and John Brown. The Richards sides are great – a bit more swinging than the ones he and Diz cut on Verve, but no less well-conceived. Titles include "Interlude In C", "Lullaby Of The Leaves", "The Things I Love", "Moody Speaks", "For Hecklers Only", and "Boppin The Blues".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(80s pressing – sealed!)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

A 60s Reprise issue of earlier material that Dizzy Gillespie cut live in Paris – not his Salle Pleyel concerts, but some great work with a variety of groups! One combo features Wade Legge on piano and Nat Peck on trombone – on cuts that include "Moon Nocturne", "Fais ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dizzy Gillespie

World Statesman
Verve, 1956. Near Mint-
A real gem from the height of Dizzy's big band years at Verve – a stunning little set that features a hip larger group that includes Joe Gordon, Melba Liston, Rod Leavitt, Phil Woods, Ernie Wilkins, and Billy Mitchell. The groove here is well-orchestrated, well-placed soul – with less ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dizzy Gillespie

Champ (Savoy)
Savoy, Early 50s. Near Mint-
A nice little collection of some of Dizzy Gillespie's best bop material for Savoy – tunes that were originally recorded as 78rpm singles – then issued together on this classic album of all-star players! The tunes are short, catchy, and often very grooving – that mix of whimsy and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, Mid 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Of the classic "big names get together for a session" albums on Verve, the best ones always seem to be the ones with one of the "Sonnys" in the list of leaders. This one compiles titles from the Sonny Side Up album – which featured Stitt and Rollins, plus others from 1957 ... LP, Vinyl record album
Philips, 1963. Very Good+
A rare 60s meeting of groovy talents from both sides of the Atlantic – and a record that matches the trumpet of Dizzy Gillespie with the hiply swinging vocals of The Double Six Of Paris! The group were a wonderfully groovy precursor to the Swingle Singers – and sung in a scatting ... LP, Vinyl record album

Something Old/Something New
Philips, 1963. Near Mint-
Beautiful work from one of Dizzy's greatest periods – and a record not to pass up! Dizzy On the French Riviera
Philips, Mid 60s. Sealed
It may have been recorded on the French Riviera – but the session's actually a killer batch of Latiny tinged tracks from Dizzy & Co – with with great arrangements by Lalo Schifrin! There's a wonderful 10 minute version of "Chega De Saudade", done as "No More ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dizzy Gillespie & Strings
Norgran, Early 50s. Very Good
Sublime work by Dizzy! Although Charlie Parker's "with strings" experiments are always the best known in the Verve catalog, Dizzy's work in this vein is simply amazing, and has him playing in a more avant garde setting than you'll ever hear from the time! The set features tracks that ... LP, Vinyl record album
Rondolette, Early 50s. Very Good+
We're never actually sure of the date of this material – and the lack of notes on the cover is no help – but we can say that the recordings are prime Diz, cut in the height of his bop years, hard grooving with a lot of pyrotechnics, a bit of vocalization, and a great sense of humor! ... Prestige, 1973. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A stunning session, and proof that Dizzy never slept on his playing – even in the 70s! Originally released as 2 separate LPs in France on the America label, the record is a crack small group set recorded in Paris, and featuring very long tracks that let Dizzy really stretch out on his solos. ... Cannonball Adderley

Presenting Cannonball
Savoy, 1955. Very Good+
One of Cannonball Adderley's first albums – recorded for Savoy way back in 1955, and done with a free and open style that's a nice contrast to his tighter sides for Mercury! The album's very relaxed – that hardbop blowing session mode that Savoy virtually pioneered – letting the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Getz & Others

Brothers & Other Mothers
Savoy, Late 40s/1976. Sealed 2LP Gatefold
2 LP reissue of some of the great early Stan Getz sessions for Savoy, with lots of great players like Serge Chaloff, Allen Eager, and Brew Moore. There's loads of unissued tracks on here, and a lot of stuff that was only out on 78. The notes are good, and this stuff is hard to find elsewhere. LP, Vinyl record album
