Jazz Waltz

LP (Item 39938) Reprise, 1961 — Condition: Sealed

Don't think "waltz music", think "modal jazz" – because the version of jazz waltz that Shorty Rogers serves up here is a great precursor to the great grooves to come on the European scene – especially the work from the artists at MPS Records! Tunes all have this great rhythmic pulse – a way of leaping into a groove that has the piano and bass dancing together wonderfully – often with some cool vibes from Emil Richards, and loads of great reed lines from Bud Shank and Paul Horn! Some tracks feature a small combo, some feature a larger group – and the whole thing is wonderful – with energy that almost rivals the Clarke Boland Big Band with Gigi Campi. Titles include "Be As Children", "Walk On The Wild Side", "Jazz Waltz", "Terrence's Farewell", and "A Taste Of Honey".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Recent UK pressing on Pure Pleasure.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Atlantic, 1955. Very Good
Kind of an unusual variation on the Martians Come Back album – done during a time when record labels almost saw their stereo releases as a completely different product! Shorty Rogers

Gospel Mission
Capitol, Early 60s. Near Mint-
A great little album – one that has Shorty Rogers fluegelhorn backed by a set of gospelly arrangements with a sort of chantin' stompin' feel to them – for a groove that's much more soulful than any of Rogers' other records from the time! Shorty blows hard, and takes the record to ... LP, Vinyl record album

A wonderful wonderful set from Barney Kessel – bossa-inflected jazz, and a wonderful setting for Barney to hit some very groovy lines on electric guitar! Cal Tjader

Along Comes Cal
Verve, Late 60s. Sealed
Great stuff – and very very groovy! Cal cut this record for Verve during the height of his swinging 60s Latin years – and he's working here with arranger Chico O'Farrill, who at the time, was perfectly suited for Cal's short, jaunty approach to a groove! The album's filled with nice ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ronnie Foster

On The Avenue
Blue Note, 1974. Sealed
Massive keyboard work from Ronnie Foster – one of his sweet funky 70s sets for Blue Note – and a killer all the way through! Ronnie plays a host of cool keys – Hammond, clavinet, and moog – and he's working here with tight production from George Benson, who really helps ... LP, Vinyl record album

One
20th Century, 1978. Near Mint-
A great little set from Ahmad – laidback, mellow, with a slowly spiralling groove that's slyly funky at times. Dewey Redman Quartet

Living On The Edge
Black Saint (Italy), 1989. Very Good+
The album's got a bit of an odd title – as we hardly think that Redman was living on the edge at the time – but it's also a great little set, no matter what the name! Dewey's playing in a soulful and inside mode on most tracks – working in a style that recalls some of Archie ... LP, Vinyl record album

Don't Stop The Music
Arista, 1977. Sealed
A stone classic from The Brecker Brothers – working here at a new level for 70s jazz fusion! Sure, it's as slick as it can be – with touches of club and disco grooves to give an even smoother edge to the jazz funk of the Brecker Brothers – but thanks to some solid soloing that's ...
