Opus In Swing

LP (Item 399330) Savoy, 1956 — Condition: Very Good
Originally: 19.99
One of the greatest of the 50s Savoy "Opus" albums – and a loosely-done blowing session that's got a really unique feel! Instead of piano, the session features two guitarists – Kenny Burrell in lead and handling solos, and Freddie Greene comping in the background in a nicely rhythmic mode. Frank Wess plays flute throughout, and the mix of flute and two guitars is really wonderful – especially considering that the only other support they get here is from the bass of Eddie Jones and drums of Kenny Clarke. Tracks are all nice and long, and titles include "Wess Side", "East Wind", "Southern Exposure", and "Kansas City Side".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Red label pressing with deep groove and RVG etch. Cover has surface wear, yellowing from age, heavy wear at the corners, and some stained spots and a spot of white paint in back.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Bird's Night – The Music Of Charlie Parker
Savoy, 1957. Near Mint-
A really well done memorial to the (then) recently-departed Charlie Parker – cut with an unusual lineup that features Cecil Payne on baritone sax, Phil Woods on alto, and Frank Socolow on tenor – all working through long, laidback takes of 4 of Bird's best known compositions! Loaded
Savoy, 1945/1946. Near Mint-

Jazz For Playboys
Savoy, Mid 50s. Sealed
One of those classic 50s sessions in which a bunch of Count Basie players split off from the bigger group and do some great small combo work on their own! Jazz Is Busting Out All Over
Savoy, 1958. Very Good+
A compilation album, but one that's classic enough to stand on its own – thanks to a rock-solid roster of talent from the mighty Savoy Records catalog of the 50s! The format here follows in the looser blowing session mode of some of Savoy's best sides of the period – and groups shift ... LP, Vinyl record album
