Struck Gold

LP (Item 398418) De-Lite, 1983 — Condition: Very Good+

Crown Heights Affair may not have actually struck gold in the charts with this set, but the album's one of their better later efforts – and has the funky club group hitting a strongly boogie-driven groove! The tunes are long, and the album rolls along on a snapping bassy bottom – working a style that's a leaner interpretation of the group's earlier funk sound, but which is still honed to a nicely focused groove. Titles include the hip hop tune "Rock The World", which features vocals by Fredrick "MC Count" Linton – plus "Put Me In Gear", "Is It As Good As It Looks", and "I Struck Gold".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(German pressing with extra tracks. Cover and labels have a name in pen.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Spirit Of The Boogie
De-Lite, 1975. Very Good- Gatefold
Way more than just a "boogie" album – as you might think from the title – and much more a hard-hitting batch of funky tunes, mixed with some even cooler laidback numbers! The album follows heavily off the style of Wild & Peaceful – mixing together the group's older ... LP, Vinyl record album
Westbound, 1972. Very Good
Maybe the funkiest album ever cut for the legendary Westbound label in Detroit – and that's saying a lot, given that the company was the initial home to Funkadelic! Yet on this stunning full length set, The Counts maybe do that famous group one better – pushing aside their vocals for ... LP, Vinyl record album
Buddah, 1970. Very Good
Although this set was issued by Buddah in 1970, it's a great set featuring some of the earliest work that the Five Stairsteps recorded for Curtis Mayfield's Windy C label during the late 60s, under his production talents as well! We love all of the Burke brothers albums, both as a group and solo, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Booker T & The MGs

Doin' Our Thing
Stax, 1968. Very Good
Booker T & The MGs – definitely doing their thing on this late 60s cooker – and moving their instrumental sound into a whole new range than before! The album has a very groovy feel – nice and tight, with especially great organ and guitar lines – often tuned towards 60s ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Hughes

Steal Away
Vee Jay, 1964. Near Mint-
Stellar work by Jimmy Hughes – one of those southern soul talents whose name you've heard, but can't always find on record! RCA, 1981. Sealed
A modern soul gem produced by Lenny White! Though White lends a touch of jazzy sophistication to the set, it's a straight up dose of mainstream modern soul, with great ensemble vocals and crisp production over tight songs that should have landed Wax at the top of the radio. Somehow though they ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ivan Boogaloo Joe Jones

Black Whip
Prestige, 1973. Very Good
Amazing stuff from Ivan Boogaloo Joe Jones! Unlike some of the other players on Prestige during the early 70s – who often got a bit weaker as the decade moved on, thanks to the departure of some of the better forces arranging and producing the records – Jones kept on playing hard, ... Ornette Coleman

Tomorrow Is the Question!
Contemporary, 1959. Very Good-
Tomorrow may be the question, but the record screams "today!" – and even this many years after its recording, this early set by Ornette Coleman has an energy and presence that cannot be denied! The sound here is kind of a rougher take on the mode that would gel more strongly on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roland Kirk

We Free Kings
Mercury, 1961. Near Mint-
One of Roland Kirk's classic early recordings for Mercury, and the kind of stuff that has him mixing his wild reed playing with more traditional hardbop structures. Most of the tracks are quartet sides, with piano, bass, and drums backing Kirk up – but the real focus is on Kirks solos, which ... LP, Vinyl record album

Slice Of The Top

A lost session by Hank Mobley – originally recorded in 1966, but not officially issued until 1979, and then only briefly until another short issue in the mid 90s! The record has Mobley really reaching out into a new bag – hitting a more soulfully arranged sound than on some of his ... LP, Vinyl record album

Von Freeman

Serenade & Blues
Nessa, 1979. Very Good+
One of the few albums ever recorded as a leader by this great Chicago tenor player who's been making the scene in the city for over 40 years.
