4.50 5

Willis Jackson's most fantastic album from this period, and one of his toughest to find! Features the excellent long groover "Nuthern Like Thuther'n" – which has an amazing spinning bossa groove that will never let you down – plus some other groovers like "Pool Shark" and "Stuffin". The group's totally tight, totally hard, and features his best accompanists – Carl Wilson on organ, and Pat Azzara on guitar. Very deep dope groove to this one! (Silver & black label pressing, with Van Gelder stamp. Cover has small splits on the top and bottom seams.)  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

For Basie
Prestige, 1957. Very Good-
Smoking tenor sax from Paul Quinichette – heard here in a small group of Basie bandmates, but in a setting that also has all the players stretch out a lot more than usual! Tracks are a bit long, and in addition to Quinichette on tenor, the set also features Shad Collins on trumpet, Nat ... LP, Vinyl record album

Groove Street
Prestige, 1962. Very Good
A very tight early session by the great organist Larry Young! The album's quite different than Young's later Blue Note work – more in-the-pocket soul jazz, but filled with the expansive sensibility that would later have him take off for the heavens. The biggest example of this tendency is ... LP, Vinyl record album

Spring Rain
Black Jazz, 1971. Very Good+
One of the few albums ever cut by reedman Rudolph Johnson – a hell of a saxophonist, and one with a great ability to combine the spiritual with the searing – a bit like Joe Farrell at his CTI best, but not as freewheeling – nicely focused, and a little bit funky in all the right ...
