Just Friends

LP (Item 39644) MPS (Germany), 1975 — Condition: Very Good

This album's a "partner" to the duo's other MPS album, Conversation, which (like this one) was also recorded during a one-week engagement at the Domicile nightclub in Munich. The group features great rhythm work from bassist Isla Eckinger, pianist Rob Pronk, and drummer Todd Canedy. Both Rosolino and Candoli are freer, and possibly sloppier, in their tone – but that's what makes the album so refreshing, as it's got a lot more of a gutbuckety approach than you'd ever hear from the players in the old days. Titles include "Quiet Nights", "Well You Needn't", "Just Friends", and "Stella By Starlight".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Dutch pressing.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Clare Fischer

Salsa Picante
MPS, 1978. Very Good+
Very nice electric Latin jazz session from this legendary LA piano player. Clare plays organ and electric piano, and the group also features Poncho Sanchez on congas. Oscar Peterson with Singers Unlimited

In Tune
MPS, 1971. Sealed
One of the first albums cut by the fab Singers Unlimited – and the set that has them backed by the Oscar Peterson Trio! Oscar Peterson & Milt Jackson

Reunion Blues
MPS, 1971. Very Good+
The piano of Oscar Peterson meets the vibes of Milt Jackson – and the result is a wonderfully groovy set! Rolf Kuhn Group featuring Phil Woods

Day After (US pressing)
MPS, 1972. Near Mint-
One of the best Rolf Kuhn sessions we can think of – and a classic MPS album that mixes spiritual avant garde jazz with unusual rhythmic progressions and world percussion. Rolf's group here features Phil Woods guesting on alto, a great companion for Rolf's fluid clarinet lines, which sound ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Handy/Ali Akbar Khan

Rainbow
MPS (Germany), 1980. Near Mint-
The second, and lesser-known collaboration between reedman John Handy and sarod player Ali Akbar Khan – and a record that's almost more freewheeling and open-ended than the first! The session's relatively spare – mostly just alto sax, sarod, and violin from L Subramaniam – plus ... LP, Vinyl record album

Friedrich Gulda

Air From Other Planets
MPS (Germany), 1969. Near Mint-
One of the most compelling albums from pianist Friedrich Gulda – a set that's as awash in tone and color as the image on the cover! LP, Vinyl record album

George Shearing

Way We Are (US pressing)
MPS, 1974. Very Good
Funky and Latiny! Although we don't normally dig records by George Shearing, this cool 1974 session for MPS is a nice groover with a good 70's sound that adds a lot of tight rhythm to Shearing's often-sleepy playing – coming up with a whole new sound that has some really wonderful moments! ... Yosuke Yamashita Trio

Chiasma (Japanese pressing)
MPS (Japan), 1975. Near Mint-
Stunning free jazz work from Japan! Pianist Yosuke Yamashita leads a trio that includes altoist Akira Sakata and drummer Takeo Moriyama – and the group has clearly absorbed a lot of influences of the free jazz scene developing in Europe during the late 60s. Most of the record is free and ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Taylor

Decipher
MPS (Germany), 1971. Sealed Gatefold
One of the hippest piano trio sessions ever on MPS – a bold little set that features the British pianist John Taylor in a trio with Tony Levin on drums and Chris Lawrence on bass! Taylor's got a style that's quite unique – with bits of early Chick Corea-esque lyricism, and touches of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Brian Auger's Oblivion Express

Reinforcements
RCA, 1975. Near Mint- Gatefold
A great later sleeper from Brian Auger – a record that's much deeper and more soulful than some of his earlier work – and done in a soaring style that's really great! Alex Lighterwood sings as much as Auger plays the keys here, but that's ok with us – because he fuses his voice ... LP, Vinyl record album
