Trumpets All Out (Savoy)

LP (Item 394317) Savoy, Mid 50s — Condition: Near Mint-
As you might guess from the title, the album's an all-trumpet affair, one that features 5 different players on the instrument – Art Farmer, Emmet Berry, Charlie Shavers, Ernie Royal, and Harold Baker – supported by spare rhythm from the trio of Don Abney on piano, Wendell Marshall on bass, and Bobby Donaldson on drums. There's a definite swing-based approach here – different than usual for some of Farmer's outings of the time – but the differences between the players are nicely pronounced, and the amazing thing about the album is how it manages to pack so much solo energy in such a relatively small space, in a way that still lets you hear the different voices clearly. Titles include "She's Just My Size", "Five Cats Swingin", "Blues In 6/4", "Trumpets All Out", and "Low Life".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mid 80s Japanese pressing – MGJ 12096 – with obi and insert. Cover has some spotty aging in back.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Dizzy Gillespie

Champ (Savoy)
Savoy, Early 50s. Very Good+
A nice little collection of some of Dizzy Gillespie's best bop material for Savoy – tunes that were originally recorded as 78rpm singles – then issued together on this classic album of all-star players! The tunes are short, catchy, and often very grooving – that mix of whimsy and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jazz For Playgirls
Savoy, 1958. Near Mint-
A really smoking little session – the brilliant follow-up to Savoy's well-known Jazz For Playboys album – and arguably a much better record to that one too! Savoy, Late 40s/1976. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
2 LP reissue of some of the great early Stan Getz sessions for Savoy, with lots of great players like Serge Chaloff, Allen Eager, and Brew Moore. There's loads of unissued tracks on here, and a lot of stuff that was only out on 78. The notes are good, and this stuff is hard to find elsewhere. LP, Vinyl record album

Kai Winding/Brew Moore/Eddie Lockjaw Davis

In The Beginning – Bebop
Savoy, Late 40s. Near Mint-
A nice selection of late 40s work by a few groups, collected by Savoy as a kind of introduction to the bebop movement, a look back at the early days of bop. Kai Winding and his quintet, featuring Allen Eager on tenor and Shelley Manne on drums, lead off the set with four tracks including "Mr. ... LP, Vinyl record album

One of the better of the many posthumous albums that Savoy issued after Bird's death. The set combines master takes and alternates of classic Parker material for the label, and includes pivotal bop tracks like "Parker's Mood", "Constellation", "Donna Lee", "Billie ... LP, Vinyl record album
