Stephanie Mills in fine formation here – working with the team of James Mtume and Reggie Lucas, who helped the lady reach the heights of her career in the early 80s! The sound here is catchy and contemporary, but hardly ever too commercial – just relaxed and grooving, in a mode that ... LP, Vinyl record album
Soaring soul from Stephanie Mills – one of the lady's all-time hits, and for good reason too! The album really gives Stephanie's great voice a lot of focus – an upbeat, uptempo groove that sets her firmly on the dancefloor, but always with a touch of class – and a lot more depth ... An amazing debut from Rufus – a group so great, they were virtually a genre unto themselves during the 70s! Rufus came from the same totally hip Chicago scene that gave the world Minnie Riperton and Earth Wind & Fire – and like both of those greats, these guys have a way of drawing ... An under-appreciated gem by Rufus – the group's last album before Chaka left to depart on her successful early 80s solo career – and a nice one nonetheless! There's a trace of 80s groove in the mix – especially on the bass and percussion – but these elements are handled ... LP, Vinyl record album
The group's first album for MCA – cut hot on the heels of their appearance in the film Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band! Given the failure of that cinematic endeavor, it's amazing that MCA signed the girls up – but it's lucky for them, because the record has a nice pop disco finish ... LP, Vinyl record album
An 80s soul classic from Imagination – one of the few groups who could manage to take silly costumes, electronic rhythms, and goofy covers – and some how manage to come up with a rock-solid set of soul! This album's great proof of that fact – as it's initially got an off-putting ... LP, Vinyl record album
The title says "blues", but there's lots of nice funky material on here, and a number of tracks with a good hard groove. Harold Jones handles the vocals, and he's backed up by a group of whiteys who seem to have a bluesy rock background. Cuts include "Come On And Get It", ... LP, Vinyl record album
The Yates are one funky family – coming into the soul game a bit too late to cash in on the family group sound of the 70s, but more than making up for their lateness with a really soulful groove! As you might guess from the label and the title, the style here is strongly in an 80s groove ... LP, Vinyl record album
